(='_'=) Posted November 27, 2012 Posted November 27, 2012 hey. im thinking about getting a new truck and selling my jeep. the truck i have in mind is a Nissan Frontier from 2000 to 2004, i dont like the 2005 and up models. would it be fine towing my bassboat? its a kingfisher, i think 16 or 17´ and im not sure of the weight. im planning on changing the jeep because i dont wheel it anymore, and its not too comfortable to pull the boat for 2 hour long drives... for the local lake its only a 20 minute drive, so its OK, but the other lakes are at least 2 hours away, so even when gas mileage is not that bad, its not a comfortable ride and max speed is only 50-55 miles per hour, while when we go on my friends truck we can reach 75 easily... i hate getting rid of the jeep, but i think its a smart decision based on my current needs... so, does any of you drive a Nissan Frontier and tow a boat?? it would be a 4 door, 4x4, 6 cil truck.... thank you. bass1980 Posted November 27, 2012 Posted November 27, 2012 I have seen people with 1999-2002 Toyota 4runners V6 tow bass boats of 17-18 feet. As long as there are no steep hills on the way you should be fine I think. I can't say for sure though but I'm sure some people here will know more. Quote
Super User Fishing Rhino Posted November 27, 2012 Super User Posted November 27, 2012 The towing isn't the problem. It's the stopping that should be the number one priority. You'll need to know the weight of your rig, and the capacity of your vehicle. If your trailer has brakes, that will help. If the tow vehicle has to stop the entire rig, you better have brakes up to the task, particularly when someone pulls out if front of you, or stops short. When you are towing leave extra room between you and the vehicle ahead. Even if your brakes are adequate, it will require a greater distance to stop when you are towing. Quote
(='_'=) Posted November 27, 2012 Author Posted November 27, 2012 thanx!! i know stopping is more important than pulling, and unfortunately my trailer does not has any brakes. i drive extra careful while towing, and im not new to towing, since we have a rental business and i have been towing a lot of things, from cement mixers to 2 horse trailers for some time now... most of the times i use my jeep, but sometimes i use also a Ford F150 and a 4 cyl Ranger until we sold it. now, the Frontier would mostly only tow the boat, which by the way, i plan on upgrading in a couple of years to at least a 18´ boat, but hopefully it will have brakes.... until then, i need to know, if im going to be fine with the truck... my other options are an Xterra which im guessing will be very similar to the Frontier, maybe even less adequate, a Jeep Liberty, and a Jeep Cherokee Sport.... Super User Fishing Rhino Posted November 27, 2012 Super User Posted November 27, 2012 One of my buddies tows his 17 foot Triton with a Jeep Liberty, and has no problems. Quote
Dave P Posted November 28, 2012 Posted November 28, 2012 99 Frontier (V6) and I have towed a Tracker 175TX with no issues. I tow my 14 footer and don't even know it's back there unless I'm going up hill. Quote
Sun Fish Posted November 28, 2012 Posted November 28, 2012 I tow my 18ft Nitro w/ a 1995 Toyota T100 V6 no problem pulling or stopping on steep hills. Quote
g7evans Posted November 29, 2012 Posted November 29, 2012 i have a 2007 toyota tacoma 6 cil 4.0 litre and i tow my 16ft slyvan alum bass boat quite frequently with no problems towing or stopping. no breaks on the trailer wither. the nissan shoul dbe very similar so im thinking you should be more than fine. (='_'=) Posted November 29, 2012 Author Posted November 29, 2012 thanx!! now i just have to find one... im not set on Frontier, but its the 1st choice right now... if not i think ill end up getting a Liberty, which should be OK also i believe... Quote
jerzeeD Posted November 30, 2012 Posted November 30, 2012 That truck will tow your boat and stop without issue. I wouldn't worry. I have had more weight than that in my 2010 Toyota Tacoma 4x4.... And that has a 2.7L 4 cylinder and a 5 speed manual. What could that boat weigh? Maybe 1,500 lbs. loaded up max? Quote

jerzeeD Posted November 30, 2012 Posted November 30, 2012 Point is that the frontier with a V6 should be able to handle 2,000-2,200 lbs. comfortably. If my 4 banger can handle 1,500 lbs. in the pocono mountains, you should have no trouble. Just check the weight of the boat you are thinking of upgrading to. I don't think too many 18'ers are in excess of 2,200 lbs. Maybe a few fiberglass rigs with high output outboards....maybe. Quote
Super User CWB Posted December 2, 2012 Super User Posted December 2, 2012 Can't help. My 2008 Frontier W/4 liter V6 is rated to tow over 6000 lbs and handles my rig with ease. Quote
WV Mojo Posted December 2, 2012 Posted December 2, 2012 I own a 2003 Frontier 4 door, 4x4. I don't tow anything with it. I bought it used a few years ago from the local Nissan dealer. It had about 50,000 miles on it when I bought it. When I bought the truck it had a rattling noise in the front of the engine when you would start the truck, with a cold engine. The dealer said they didn't know the cause of the noise. It ended up being the timing belt losing its teeth. Just something to watch for, only problem I've had with the truck. Quote
(='_'=) Posted December 3, 2012 Author Posted December 3, 2012 thanx!! i went today to look at a 2003, XE, crew cab 4x4... it has 116000 miles, and the owner wants the equivalent to $9200 ... the truck is extra clean, it has a tiny scratch in the tailgate, and thats all, interiors are as new, exterior also... it will need new tires soon... http://www.autotrader.com.mx/pictures/NetPics/20121129chi1515net.jpgbig im not sure if i should get this one or wait for another one... i doubt i will find one as clean as this one, but, im not sure about the long bed, i like the looks of a short bed better, and, even when the short bed has a limited space, i can always put the gear in the boat... about the timing belt, i heard its required to replace it after 100,000 miles or so... so thats probably one thing i would do right after getting this or any other truck... Christian M Posted December 3, 2012 Posted December 3, 2012 The XTerra is basically the same truck as the frontier mechanically, you can also get the XTerra with a supercharged engine. They hold their value pretty much as well as Jeeps do. I had a 2000 Xterra that went to 260,000 with regular maintenance and never had a major problem until it gave out. I would tow my buddies 17' Tracker with no problem. The engine blew and I sold it rather than fix it, but the guy that bought it from me put a new engine in it and still drives it daily. I'm saving up for a 94 frontier w/40,000 miles on it. My boss owns it but its more of a show truck than a daily driver. He has a Hummer & an H2 so hes gotta make room in his garage. I would say go for it. Nissans from those years are absolute beasts. You can upgrade pretty much everyting when it comes to brakes and suspension too. Quote

You shouldn't be towing any trailer in excess of 65 MPH. Trailer tires are not made to withstand speeds higher than that. Quote
