BirdNestBen Posted November 27, 2012 Posted November 27, 2012 Dont wanna ramble on too much here but had a problem with my Revo Stx (big loss of casting distance) and took it back to Bass Pro... salesman stated that they had a Shimano that was an excellent reel, so I swapped for this one... a Shimano Chronarch 200e6 reel...6:5:1 7bb (the white one) Putting it on a Falcon Bucoo trapcaster MH 7' Rod. Just wondering if anyone has tried this reel, and your opinions on it... I haven't used the reel yet, and was wondering whether to keep it, or to take it back and trade for another reel.... Looking to stay around $200 but would pay a little more for a good quality reel... I have had a Calcutta I used for 15 years, and just bought a new one about a year ago.. Gonna use this setup for rattle traps and crankbaits mainly... and would like to stay with a low profile type reel. Quote
Super User .RM. Posted November 27, 2012 Super User Posted November 27, 2012 Shimano Chronarch .. no matter what series they are top shelf! Quote
Delaware Valley Tackle Posted November 27, 2012 Posted November 27, 2012 The Chronarch is a fine reel, but so is the STX. Be aware of reel use, storage and maintenance to avoid problems. Sudden loss of casting distance may be an issue besides reel design or quality. Good luck and enjoy your new reel. Quote
tstone Posted November 27, 2012 Posted November 27, 2012 You'll love the Chronarch. I have a few and they're great reels. Quote
BirdNestBen Posted November 27, 2012 Author Posted November 27, 2012 yeah revos are good.. just had a problem and hadn't used the reel very much.... casted the chronarch a few times out in the yard... and casted a long ways... reeled pretty smooth.. Quote
Super User LgMouthGambler Posted November 28, 2012 Super User Posted November 28, 2012 RM said it. You really cant go wrong with the Chronarc, or any Shimano for that matter. Enjoy it, its an amazing reel. Quote
Super User Hooligan Posted November 28, 2012 Super User Posted November 28, 2012 $200 reel marker the Chronarch is one of the best there is. Excellent stock bearings, decent drag, extremely durable. The STX is a good reel as well, but has some issues being talked about regarding spool bearings and pinion gear durability. I have seen no issues personally. Another good reel in that category is the Lews Tournament Pro. I've had very, very good results with this reel, and can easily recommend it as a good alternative to the Chronarch if you don't want to go the Shimano route. I personally have about a dozen of the E series Chronarch and would say that it's the best reel n its class. Quote
BirdNestBen Posted November 28, 2012 Author Posted November 28, 2012 yes I had the original Revo Stx and it fished great.... when I bought the new model fished great a few trips, then wouldn't cast worth a flip... I have never had one issue with Shimano reels in the past.... Gonna test it out today if it warms up any today and see how it works out... thanks for the comments... Quote
rubba bubba Posted November 28, 2012 Posted November 28, 2012 I'd keep the Shimano if you have other Revos. It's good to have a variety so you can learn the subtle differences between them and use them accordingly. Quote
Mikey Posted November 28, 2012 Posted November 28, 2012 I have a 1st gen. chronarch (1991) and still operates perfectly .... has a flipping switch also. Quote
BirdNestBen Posted November 29, 2012 Author Posted November 29, 2012 yeah a lot of guys talk about the old Chronarch 50mg... they still cost big money so must be an awesome reel.... Anyways tested out the reel today and was super smooth reeling in a crankbait... I just strung some old mono on it to try it out... It casted a good distance, but not as far as the Mettle I bought on black friday from academy... I had new powerpro braid on it and that probably made a difference... As far as the fishing went had 4 or 5 strikes, but didn't catch anything... Quote
barroncooper Posted December 2, 2012 Posted December 2, 2012 I have that exact combo for traps and i absolutely love to fish this rig. Quote
Super User kickerfish1 Posted December 2, 2012 Super User Posted December 2, 2012 I have a 1st gen. chronarch (1991) and still operates perfectly .... has a flipping switch also. Are you referring to the Bantam Chronarch? A silver finished reel with a "hood" that pops up like a car, if you will. If so, I too, have this very reel and it still is operating strong. I also have a chronarch 100sf that is absolutely perfect mechanically and the retrieve is so buttery smooth you hardly know your engaging the handle. Can't speak for the new e series but if they are like the older chronarchs it will last for years if regularly maintained. Quote
BirdNestBen Posted December 5, 2012 Author Posted December 5, 2012 well here's a update... I picked up an order at a fishing store... and saw the Revo Mgx... I liked the feel of it and also the Revo Premier... I have had a Revo Stx in the past so I'm a big fan of Revos... I got my money back for the Shimano and found a deal on the Revo Mgx... I have a Falcon Cara gonna put it on so hopefully it will be a nice combination... Shimano fans- don't fret... I have a shimano Calcutta baitcaster, and a Shimano spinning reel... Quote
Hanover_Yakker Posted December 5, 2012 Posted December 5, 2012 I'd be interested to hear your thoughts on the MGX after a 1/4 season of usage. I have a kayak friend in NC who is a loyal Daiwa user but always tries new things. He said he liked it and it performed well, but he preferred the feel of his Pixy and Steez. No reel difference in performance. Quote
BirdNestBen Posted December 5, 2012 Author Posted December 5, 2012 sure i will do that.. if it casts as good as the stx and is as smooth it will be great... The cara rod is for crankbaits so I'm sure I will like it... Quote
dam0007 Posted December 6, 2012 Posted December 6, 2012 Own the 201E5 not that much time on the water with it but love it! Surprised you didn't opt for the 5 for crank baits. Quote
