Zip Lock Bags

Hey guys, This topic has probley been brought up so forgive me if so but is there any advantage or disadvantage to keeping soft plastics in zip lock bags instead of the original package?

I tried the ziplock baggie thing, I tried putting my softies in Plano tackle boxes, but have gone back to using the bag they came in.

Ziplocks that I used tended to get soft and easily punctured in the summer heat. Maybe using the thicker freezer baggies with labels would work better, but I still didn't see any logic to it as the bags that they came in were thicker, and better suited to being out in the heat. Just my .02.

If the original bag is a zip lock bag to start with and some are, no reason tomake a change. However if the bag is heat sealed and you must cut it open, then a good quality zip lock bag is a good idea to help preserve the worms. When you do change bags, keep the original bag label to identify the worms.

When I started my brother gave me a lot of his spare stuff including several bags of soft plastics with only a couple worms/lizards in each. Couldn't see any sense in keeping 10 seperate bags with only 2 or 3 worms in each so I put all the worms in one ziplock and all the lizards in another. Didn't notice any disadvantages. Although I should probably mention that all the colors were fairly similar. Maybe there would be problems with colors running/bleeding if they were different? Im not sure. I keep them in the bags they came in now. Like WRB said, if you do decide to change them, keep the original bag label.

Consider the following:

STORAGE OF PLASTICS

1. In original bags.

2. In Plano (or other brand) plastic tackle box by type and color.

3. Retain original bags and place unused plastics back in original containers.

WHILE FISHING

1. In original bags.

2. Take plastic tackle box with you.

3. Original plastic bags in a ZIP Lock bag by type or color.

As stated above, keep plastics in original bags as long as possible.

i use the snack size zip lock brand bags. they are thick enough to not easily get punctured.

i usually put 3-5 of each type of plastic ill be using that day and bring that along with me. so instead of carrying 4 or 5 10-20 count bags of bait, ill only be carrying 15-20 baits total.

this may not work for everyone but it does very well for me since i fish from shore and my outings are only a couple hours long.

I rely on the gallon size ziplock freezer bags to keep me organized. The freezer bags are a heavier plastic that just works better for me. I can put 10 or so different colors of the same style bait, in their original packages inside the gallon zip locks.

I keep the quart size ones around in case the original packaging fails or isn't adequate.

Here is how I do my soft plastics now. I've gone down the road of box's, zip-locks, etc.

I found this approach more effective, if I use the last bait I know by the empty package what to reorder. And I don't have to worry about chemical interactions between soft plastic types.

It' working for me so far, the packages are easy to flip through.

It's just Duct tape, a two-hole punch, and snap rings that you can get anywhere.

I always know what I'm using, what works and what don't ( most don't ), and when I'm out of something I know exactly what to reorder.

I put the original bags inside large zip-locks all labeled accordingly, Craws, Toads etc...

Iv tried all methods boxes, soft sided bags, et.. this gives me more space with a specif department on my boat to hold them all, its easy to look in there and find the genre of plastic I'm looking for.

Less weight then boxes as well.

I buy my plastic worms and craws in bulk (100 per bag) so keeping them in the original bag is kinda cumbersome. I keep a dozen or so of each color in Plano boxes and re-stock as necessary.
