gallowaypt Posted November 23, 2012 Posted November 23, 2012 Hey guys, just thought I'd get a few of your opinions on whether or not the black Friday purchase I made will work for my purposes. So I went to bass pro and took advantage of their $70 pro qualifier combo. I need a cranking set up, mainly for shallow cranks since I'm bank bound, so I was looking for a moderate tip. All that was left were 7' M/H fast tips. I got one anyway, just wasn't sure if the fast tips will rip the trebles out during the fight/Hookset. Any expertise on the matter will be gladly appreciated. Thanks BR! Quote
Global Moderator Mike L Posted November 23, 2012 Global Moderator Posted November 23, 2012 It can work, just don't horse 'em. Definatly use mono. It's not ideal, and you may want to keep what you have anyway that is a great deal. I don't know anything about the PQ rod but the reel itself makes that a great deal. Mike 1 Quote
McAlpine Posted November 23, 2012 Posted November 23, 2012 You got a fine deal on the PQ MH/F 7' combo. Keep it as a jig rod and now go find a crankbait rod. :-P Quote

Thanks BR! As an article pointed out on this website not all rod manufactures are the same, some manufactures will label a fast tip that one manufacture may label as a extra fast tip, with that being said try it and see what happens. I used a Mojo Plastic casting as make shift spinning crankbait rod and it worked well only lost/missed two fish using fireline with a FC leader. Point is if you lose/miss fish the tip maybe too fast. Super User Sam Posted November 23, 2012 Super User Posted November 23, 2012 Use mono for treble hook baits. Sweep rod to right or left when setting treble hook baits, not over your head. 12 to 17 pound test depending on rod's specifications. As you start to get bites note if the "fast tip" is making you pull the bait away from the bass. If so, slow down your sweep. Quote
Super User Raul Posted November 24, 2012 Super User Posted November 24, 2012 You don´t need a crankbait rod for crankbaiting Use mono for treble hook baits. Sweep rod to right or left when setting treble hook baits, not over your head. 12 to 17 pound test depending on rod's specifications. As you start to get bites note if the "fast tip" is making you pull the bait away from the bass. If so, slow down your sweep. And back down your drag a little bit. I´ve fished cranks with fast action rods for more than 3 decades and very seldomly loose a fish. Quote
gallowaypt Posted November 24, 2012 Author Posted November 24, 2012 Thanks guys..great advice. I think I'll try and fish cranks with this combo. The tip doesn't seem too fast, and id it doesn't work out, I'll just sell the rod and buy a moderate tip. Quote
