hey, yesterday i contacted a scammer selling a Nitro 882. just to let you know to beware of this people....

read from bottom to top the chronology of the emails:

On Thu, Nov 22, 2012:

Ok, I will send you my info. I just want to know something.

By any chance, were you trying to sell a bike some time ago?? And also a jeep??

I knew it since the first email I got from you, just wanted to see how far you would go. This is ridiculous, if you really think you would be getting a dime from me.

And yes, I already reported this to Autotrader, Craiglist, and FBI.

Ok. So, to do it your way, how and when should I send the money?? I really want the boat, I wouldn’t want someone to purchase it before I do, so please tell me where should I send the money and when can I expect the boat to be there. I will use the 5 day inspection time period to have it checked by a mechanic, but if everything is as you mention, I have no doubt I will keep it.

As I understand I send the money to a third party, and the third party will give it to you after I agree on keeping the boat??

Thank you.

that is not an option we do with my way or no

On Thu, Nov 22, 2012 at 6:45 PM,

Ok so, if you offer a 5 day period to inspect the boat, and the option to accept or reject at your expense, can you put it in El Paso?? I can drive up there, inspect it, and if I like it, which Im pretty sure I will, I can send you the money right away. Of course you don’t have to send it to my address, you could send it to an Autotrader office and I will go up there and inspect the boat. After that, I will pay to Autotrader and take the boat.

Is that OK??

At this moment I am in WA state in a military base, getting ready for Afghanistan . I do a special training program everyday day and I am not allowed to get out of the unit and to speak over the phone. The shipping will take 3 to 5 days depending on your location. As long as I'm dealing with Autotrader and they can ship the boat anywhere in the US.Because it is a large transaction, we will complete the deal only using an authorized third part like Autotrader because I already prearranged the whole process with them, using their escrow Safe Pay Program for boats not listed on their website. The boat is located in the Autotrader warehouse in Dallas,TX (ready for delivery). I asked them to allow viewers to go there and inspect the boat but their reply was "We are not a showroom!" In this case, I will offer a 5-day period to inspect the boat from the moment you receive it, before I'll have your money. I think this is more than fair for both of us.The payment will be handled by Autotrader , and you will benefit of 5 days inspection time period (test drive) and the option to accept or reject the boat on my expense. If you are still interested just send me your full name and shipping address. I will forward your info to Autotrader and they will notify you about our deal. Thanks

Hey. Thanx for replying so fast. Can you provide a couple more pics?? I would like a pic of the console and one of the electronics, and if you have an overview of the boat´s layout I would appreciate it as well. Im really interested in the boat, it would be a good upgrade from my current 1977 boat.

Hey. Good morning. Im looking at the craiglist add you have for a Nitro NX 882. Is it still for sale?? Can you tell me more about it? What´s the top speed?? What about fuel consumption?? What´s the trolling motor thrust?? What type of electronics does it includes?? Im interested in the boat, but I need to know these details first since it’s a 3 hour drive from where I live.

Thank you,

Yeah, thanks for the heads up. Unfortunately this is the most common scam on CL and it happens too often! You'll see a lot of this just slightly varied, but it's always "it's stored at this place ready to ship when money is received."

I guess it works on some people. Glad it didn't work on you!

I think I would have quit when he didn't answer the original questions and replied with a bunch of mumble jumble. I have gotten some good deals from CL but you sure need to watch what your doing.

Posted

Yup, too much nonsense. A typical deal would be, asking if the boat was still for sale, some details, meet up and handle it in person. If it's too good to be true then it is.

I've run into similar scammers some claiming to be soldiers some claiming to be mothers of fallen soldiers selling their boat. These people are sick and twisted, somehow I doubt they are in the USA and are probably in some country that the FBI or any law enforcement agency couldn't go after them.

what i dont understand, is why they use the exact same name and explanation for everything they sell... they just replace the product, but the rest of the story is just a copy/paste... it just as easy as googling "marshal pesta" and the first links you get are for scam reports... i still dont know how it works for some people, how is people so dumb they would send money without seeing the product first...

I was looking for a tow vehicle recently and received this scam from two separate listings. They were exactly the same except for:

a. The first seller was an Air Force lieutenant getting ready to go to Afghanistan.

b. The second seller was a recent widower who was selling the truck because it reminded her of her dead husband. Real scumbags these people.

Both were selling 10 year old Toyota Tacoma at exactly 62,000 miles. Both cars were ready to be shipped by eBay Motors and all I had to do was pay the money.

I replied back to both of them how amazed I was at the similarities of their stories. I also let them know that I am LAPD.

Neither replied back after that.
