I'm going to be ordering one of these for Black Friday and I'm just not sure which one I should I get. What are the differences in the two? Also how do they fish with their ratings I was looking into getting a 7'2" heavy hoping its power would be like my MH veritas am I right in doing this?

I can't help on which one, but I'll throw in that the new improved 2nd generation Recons are now out. Even though you won't see them on many websites, (not even the Phenix site) they just started shipping last week.

There's a great thread over @ TT discussing the new M1 and even has a comparison with the current Gen 1 Recons. FWIW I gather the M1 is the stouter rod and might be more true to its rating while the original gen 1 recons might be a little soft.

From everything I could gather, your choice in the 7'2 H would be accurate. I've really struggled to find any solid reviews/discussions about the M1. From what I've read it sounds that it is a stout rod and more durable than the Recon. I've read some posts that said the Recon has breaking issues, but I've also heard that about the Veritas, and I have two of those that have worked flawlessly for what theyre worth. I've read some reviews that claim the M1 can pick up somewhere between 15-20lbs to a 90 degree angle and not break. Everything I've heard about the Recon has been that it performs above its price range. I was about to buy one until I started considering the M1. Then the monkey climbed on my back and started pointing me to more expensive rods. I'm debating right now between a Dobyns Champ 704c and the Phenix M1 7'2H. I would also be interested to hear if people have anything more to say about the M1 as well.

Here is a link to the thread I started

I've had a MH Veritas and have a Recon 715. The recon is lighter and infinitely (for me) more comfortable than the Veritas. Action/power between the two is kind of hard since the Veritas fish a little heavier than their power and Recons fish a bit lighter. My 715 can toss a 5-6" Keitech on a 1/2oz head and not feel like I am over taxing it at all. The Veritas in a MH felt like I could snap it with a 1oz. bait (how it felt to me). Action-wise I'll put it this way, BOTH are called "fast" neither in reality are. Veritas is closer to an XF and the Recon is a bit slower, but nowhere near "Moderate/Fast".

Now the M1 is, from what I gather, a 30 ton graphite (veritas grade, akin to IM6 graphite) with a Chinese version of that 3M resin that Loomis and NFC started to use a couple years back. With this resin less material is needed to attain a specific strength. With that you can go "ultra light" weight with adequate strength or you can go just plain old "light" weight with excess strength. The M1 is the latter.

What are you planning on doing with this rod? (Reel/Line, etc)

If you are prone to ripping fish faces or loosing fish once they are hooked, you may want to check out the Recon.

Im trying to use Jigs Texas rigs and Carolina rigs with a lews tournament pro or chronarch 50e

I think I'm going to order the 715 gen 2 recon and the 7'8" heavy M1. Recon will be my new jig rod and the m1 will be for any punching, flipping, heavy cover applications.

I'm using a veritas as my jig rod right now and am honestly not that impressed.

There is A LOT of good info in the rod forum at tackletour. Not sure if we're allowed to direct link other forums or I'd do so.

I decided to get the 7'2 heavy m1 they didn't have any medium heavys so I hope it still works well for what I'm trying to do with it

i was following the thread on tackletour about the m1 rods. Bit the bullet and got the 6'9 light spinning rod from tw with the 20% off. I cant want for it to come in so i can compare it too my dobyns champion 682. I want a good dropshot rod, hope it works out...

Just got my rod in today. Its awesome. the reel seat is very comfortable and looks amazing. The carbon fiber is awesome. The 6'9 light is exactly what i was looking for, its super light and balances perfectly with my daiwa fuego 1000a.

Cant wait to get out tomm and try it out even though were supposed to get snow :x Havnt fished it yet, but just on looks and build quality its highly recommended :D

Got out for a bit, i have a lake down the road. It was 35 out and raining so i made it quick. Rod is super nice, loads great, just had a little 1/4oz lipless crank on, threw it a mile. Sensitivity is amazing. This is one of those rods that i truly think you get more than what you pay for. Seriously considering selling my two dobyns to get another m1. My only other rod i have that i would never sell, and also feel like you get more than what you pay for is my 6'3 fenwick smallmouth rod.

I broke down two of my rods to compare weights with the m1. A 6'3 medium elite tech smallmouth, 6'8 medium light dobyns champion, and the 6'9 light m1. The dobyns was the heaviest, the smallmouth second, and the m1 the lightest.

Tomm is going to be nice out so ill be playing with the dropshot and 3-4 inch senkos...

Great post!

The recon is a very sensitive rod and lightweight rod for its price point. Have you fished one by chance to compare it to the M1? Would love to hear about sensitivity, balance, and the tip section of how the rods compare.

I too like the elite tech... excellent choice in its price point. Fenwick got this rod line correct.

The dobyns rods weigh slightly more for several reasons. The first is all the cosmetic bling on the rods and secondly they balance better than any rod I have fished. That is one thing Gary takes pride in his rod lines.

I havent had the opportunity to try out a recon, no one carries phenix in my area. I was taking a chance on the m1, and happy that i did.

I go through phases where i like to downsize, or switch my reels around on rods, lol. Might throw my ci4 or stradic fj on the m1 to see what feels the best.

Thanks for the review! I'm impressed you're considering selling your Dobyns' to get another M1.

Dont get me wrong, dobyns are awesome rods, i have a champion and coalition, i just think the m1 is a better rod at a lower price. Had it out for a bit today throwing dropshots, 10lb power pro, 6lb flouro leader. Threw some 4.5 roboworms which is my usual worm, sensitivity is amazing. Could feel the bottom with no problem. Definitely keeping the fuego on this rod, this combo is about 10oz's ;)

Awesome and awesome. I can't wait to get mine. Sounds like more might be in my future as well based on this.

If I weren't saving up for a truck I'd have bought more already
