I was fishing in the ICW around daybreak, the saltwater bite is getting slow so I was working hard. There was a gentleman fishing with his son about 7 years old. Not wanting to cast over them, I was casting in a different direction. As things would have it I got the strike, quite often I like to hand my rod to the kid, but this fish had some shoulders and I was afraid of him dropping my combo in to the drink. It wound up being a nice snook, but I felt bad as I was the one catching the fish and not the young child, they caught nothing.

That sucks they didn't catch anything but I gotta say I agree with your decision. Better the kid be a little disapointed then you lose an expensive rod and reel. Besides, hes still young. He's got plenty of fish ahead of him.

The kid probably went home and told his mom how much his dad sucked at catching fish and how some old man out fished them, lol.

Well, to you and I you're not old. But in the eyes of a 7 year old, you're from the Jurasic era, lol.

I know how you feel. A couple of months ago I took my daughter fishing. While she was eating a snack I caught a channel cat on her rod and reel. She didn't say anything until we got home and then my wife unloaded on me.
