What To Choose

Guys I need some serious help on how to choose the right rod. I'll be using this rod for swimbaits, plastic worms, and the umbrella rig. Can you guys help me?

That's a good point of reference. I might opt for a longer rod than 7' but a lot of that is personal preference.

If you could help us out with the equipment that you have and how much you are looking to spend, then we could give you more specific and better advice. Plastic worms are on the lighter end of the spectrum and umbrella rigs are on the heavier end. Also, what type of swimbaits are you looking to throw? soft or hard? What size? Some more information would be nice!

Something in the 7-7.5 foot range in a medium-heavy should cover a majority of the baits you listed as long as you're staying to the more average sizes of baits and rigs.

Whether it's casting or spinning gear I would not be looking for 1 rod to cover it all. I use a med for lighter swimbaits and plastic worms, for heavier baits and the chance you may catch more than 1 fish on umbrella rig a stronger rod is a good choice. Rod ratings are not universal and may vary from 1 manufacturer to another.

I would recommend a 7'6 H rod with 80# braid alone just for the A Rig. Otherwise I would go 7' MH Fast for the other.

Just make sure to look at the lure ratings based on what you'll be throwing. Most of my MH rods say 1oz except my older berkley which is over 1oz (1/4- 1 1/4) .The umbrella rig will probably be heavier than 1oz depending on the amount of lures, if you use swimbait hooks or not. I get by on that rod if I choose to throw it, which is hardly ever. but it works and can be used for all around fishing for me if I chose.

You'd probably want a heavy action rod as others stated or if you aren't fishing this rig much a m/h that has a higher lure rating than 1oz. with a longer handle. See what weights youll be throwing with the worms as well.

Id look at what Id be fishing of the listed techniques primarily then choose according to those. Id assume worms and swimbaits...then the rig.
