Hey guys,

I'm looking to add this unit to my bass tracker, do you guys recommend a ram mount? If so how do I know which one would fit best for my boat.

I'd use a ram mount. Which mount you need depends on where you want to mount it, and the configuration of your boat. The first image is the mount in my Z-7. It has the two inch ball pivots. The second is a swing arm mount on my Z-8. There was no good place to mount the ball type of swivel. Keep in mind, the ball type of mount has much more adjustability, while the swing arm is much stronger. Also, the more nearly vertical you keep the center section, the better. If it's horizontal, then there is a lot of leverage which can cause the setting to go out of adjustment if you are pounding through a nasty chop.

There may be a ten dollar difference in the cost, so economics should not factor into which to use.

I am using the RAM-111U, but I just fish small waters.

The recommended mount size is the RAM-D-111U or RAM-D-111U-C. That will handle boat wakes and wind waves.

I chose the metal to put the mount on, not the plastic. That unit is heavy.

Awesome setup Wayne! I've been reading a lot of posts from people responding to a thread made about "Ram Mounts Moving" and primarily with the 1198 unit with the 2.25 ball mount. is the swing arm mount stronger? sucks because a lot of people were chiming in about no matter how tight they tighten them down, they still move...

I just want a really strong mount that won't budge! I mean I'm not fishing in Heavy seas and winds, but I don't want to have to readjust my unit each time I get my boat on plane or actually fish in some rough stuff here and there.

Any thoughts?

Yes, I have read that too, That mostly applies to a bow mounted unit, but the RAM D will move if the water is rough enough. Surely you wouldn't take that tin can out on Erie when the wind blows though.

If you want the adjustability of the ball type mount, there are larger sizes.

The swing arm types that have no ball would be more stable in rough water if you can put one in a usable position.

Visit the RAM web site and look at all the stuff there, not just the marine class mounts.

I just checked out both them ram D mounts, I def want the one that can handle the humminbird 1198 units the best, and yes I don't go out with my boat in harsh weather lol so I'm not really that concerned. But I just don't want to be readjusting my unit every two seconds either. For my boat and how my layout is, which one can you suggest that would be the best fit for me with your advice? I don't know if I'd like the Ram D-111-U-C with how short it is compared to the Ram D-111-U. Which I think in your picture, that's the mount you are running. How do you like it, and how has it been holding up? Would you of rather had the swing arm mount instead? Again I'm not fishing in crazy weather either, actually most of the time last year was all private lakes. But I still want something strong.

No, I wouldn't consider the swing mount.

No, I am not using the D size. Mine is the 1 1/2" ball model RAM-111U.

It works somewhat OK on rough water on a heavy fiberglass bass boat at the console. I have used it on a friend's 21' Triton at Lake Fork and Guntersville. He uses that size for his 998c SI. Both of us also use a shock block between the gunnel and RAM arm in case the water gets really rough iike it was in May at Fork. The wind sort of blows in Texas, LOL.

I have four of that size RAM system, I use one of them at the bow, another one on a board to make the unit a portable for demos and SAR on other boats, and one in my den.

The RAM-D-111U would give you the reach you need and have the display adjustable enough so it is not past the gunnel if you want it protected from side impact on trees/docks. That is why I got the longer arm version.

Wow that is just awesome!! So you use the Ram-111U 1 1/2" ball model. Do you think I should go with that or the D model with the 2.25" ball? I feel that the D model looks extremely bulky.

If I was you, I would use the D size.

I don't get in boat wakes or waves more than 1' since I fish small waters that are HP restricted or electric-only.

thinking about going with the 998c SI Combo instead... as far as ram mounts for the 998 unit, same thing for 1198?

Yes, that is the recommended size on the RAM web site selection page. Look it up yourself in the marine electronic mount section.

The 1 1/2" will do a little better with the lighter unit, but it wll move when you hit boat wakes with that light flat hull.
