I'm a topwater nut and want to get around to throwing poppers more this year. I don't mind paying a premium if I can get bit a little more, but if there's no real diffrence I'd rather get more value.

Would you rather purchase the rico or pickup 2 diffrent brands of poppers for the same price?

I'm intrigued by the xcalibur zell pop and the bps premium popper at a cheaper price.

The Rico is a good lure but is it worth the cost? I guess thats up to you. Another great popper is Don Iovino's

Splash-It. One of my good fishing buddies is a very close friend of Don said that the Splash-It is a Rico who's paint job didnt pass factory standards, a factory blem, so Don buys them up, repaints them and sells them as the Splash-It.

I've compared the 2 lures side by side and they do look the same. Mark swears that if you carefully remove the new paint job the Rico name is still there on the lure.

Rico didn't do nuthin' for me, yeah, see

If you're going to spend $$$ on a popper, make it a Megabass Pop X.

I've traditionally used Rebels and had decent luck with them, but I splurged & picked up a Megabass off Ebay and I'll tell ya what, I don't know if I'll have the stones to ever throw it.  It looks like it belongs somewhere under glass or something.  If I ever do, it'll probably be thrown on my frog rod using 65-80# braid.  lol

I'll put my black w/white herringbone PopR up against any other.

Michael, Rico, Iovino, Yellow magic, zell pop in that order are all great spitters, there is manufacturing differences, so don't be afraid to modify them. I have one rico that has no foil left, but catches better than any other popper, go figure.

I've never used those ones before besides the Pop R and the popping frog and both work well. As for poppers though, none compair to a skitterpop. The skitterpop bloops, spits, and walks better than any of them, and makes great noises from tiny blips to loud blurps.

Rico is definetely a nice popper, but I would reccomend the Yellow Magic or Excalibur Zell Pop which are more reasonably priced premium poppers and are as good or better than the Rico in my opinion.

Yes it is, I haven't tried the yellow magic but ricos are far superior to zell pops or skitter pops or pop'rs.  Lights out a michael is a popper very similar to a rico, I feel like there somehow linked but cant remeber, maybe the michael was the predecessor to the rico or something like that.

The zell pop is a great lure as are the rebels. They flat out catch fish but,...the rico is in a class by itself.Yes it IS too expensive for what it is but in my opinion it is worth it. Once you hear the sound it makes the first time you'll know why. It sounds dead on like shad poppin on the water plus it walks better/easier and spits water further than most others. I know I paid a little too much for mine but am happy with my purchases.

Reason, what is a michael?

Looks just like a rico, made by Tifa, hard to find. I get them and the yellow magics from Japan. The YM I've seen in stores lately are a bit different.

I think the Ricos are worth the price. I catch many more bass on Ricos than I did when I fished Pop-Rs. You have a very slim chance of losing them since they are topwaters. I have been fishing one particular Rico for three years.

I have tried all different brands of poppers but the Rebel Pop R is by best producer. I have caught fish on other more expensive poppers, but the first popper out of the box is always a Rebel. But, its all about confidence.

Yes.  :)

Yes.

I have one particular RICO that devastates.  It almost walks itself, and smallmouth seem to attack it with visceral rage.

Who cares how much it costs.....I've been using the same RICO for over a decade.  The same guys who complain about the cost of RICOS will spend $100 a month on Senko's or Rage Tails and not think twice about it.  :)

Plop down your $20 and enjoy your life a little more.

Yep it isn't just a fancy name or paintjob your paying for.It truly does have properties that make it stand out  as better from other brands. :)

Is there a color preference for the Rico? Should not matter too much with a top water.

Color won't matter too much. Its more about the color of the belly. Nomally you want something white,dark/black,chrome,or maybe something clear/translucent depending on what kind of water clarity you have and the present light conditions. As an all around color white or bone is the best place to start IMO.

Any diffrences between the two sizes (other than literal size lol)? I'd imagine like alot of topwaters the longer model is a bit easier to walk.

I fish smack dab in the middle of the fall line on the James river and I'm thinking mr rico and mr smallie may have an apointment next year  8-)

I have been about to pull the trigger and order a Rico or  Yellow Magic Popper. Both sem to have very good reviews.
