jchez444 Posted November 13, 2012 Posted November 13, 2012 Will be getting the powell 703cb, which is mainly going to be used for cranks down to 12-15ft, traps, squarebill and topwaters. which gear ratio should i pair this up with, a 5:5-1 or the standard 6:4-1?? Quote
Super User LgMouthGambler Posted November 13, 2012 Super User Posted November 13, 2012 The fact that you added a topwater to that bit, I would go 6. Quote
Super User new2BC4bass Posted November 13, 2012 Super User Posted November 13, 2012 I'm disappointed in you LMG!!! You forgot to mention which Shimano reel to buy. I'd suggest the standard Zillion.6.3:1 or the Z200H 6.4:1. 1 Quote

Super User J Francho Posted November 13, 2012 Super User Posted November 13, 2012 I fish a topwater and jerkbaits with the same reel I use for cranking, a Daiwa Alphas. You can find the US version, TD-Sol, on the used or like new market. They are 5.8:1, 23" per turn. Quote
Super User new2BC4bass Posted November 13, 2012 Super User Posted November 13, 2012 I was using a Daiwa Fuego, but now have an Abu 1600C on one rod (both 6.3:1), and am going to try a new-2-me TD-Z 103ML on another rod (5.7:1). Trying to make my Sol a finesse reel. Quote
Super User J Francho Posted November 13, 2012 Super User Posted November 13, 2012 Trying to make my Sol a finesse reel.Just match it to the right rod, and it's good to go. I can fling peanut sized cranks plenty far enough on a AVC70MM. Lighter plastics are easy enough on a AVC69MLXF. 1 Quote

Super User retiredbosn Posted November 13, 2012 Super User Posted November 13, 2012 The ipt is the crucial factor, between manufacturer and series within the manufacturer reels there can be a significant variation of ipt with similar gear ratio. Abu's reels are like this a 6.3/1 brings in 30ipt on the C4, but the Revo with a 6.4/1 only brings in 26ipt. Good luck Quote
Mike__D Posted November 18, 2012 Posted November 18, 2012 Pflueger Patriarch in a 6.4:1 gear ratio will do almost anything you ask of it. Great reel. mike D Quote
