xxjace Posted November 13, 2012 Posted November 13, 2012 Okay I've fished bass jigs for a long time now..mostly football jigs with good success..quick question I fish them all with the hook pointed down except for swimjigs I point them up.. Have I been fishing football jigs wrong all this time? I've hooked up with plenty of fish with my hook pointed down .
Super User scaleface Posted November 13, 2012 Super User Posted November 13, 2012 I dont think Ive ever seen a jig with the hook pointing down.
11justin22 Posted November 13, 2012 Posted November 13, 2012 Hook down? I don't how u do that but yes it's wrong. 1
merc1997 Posted November 13, 2012 Posted November 13, 2012 put the hook point down on a flt surface and then pull the eyelet of the jig up, as it would travel setting the hook. you will notice that almost immediately the hook point is traveling away from your target area where it would be hooking. there are advantages of hooking a bass in the lower jaw. you can power them upside down during the fight, and then they are quite easy to bring in. with all that stated the roof of a bass's mouth is thebest target area. bo
ClackerBuzz Posted November 13, 2012 Posted November 13, 2012 i don't think physics will allow you to fish a jig 'upside down'. kinda like asking if you've been driving your car upside down. you can rig ur soft plastic upside down but the jig will still drag right side up. tie ur jig on and drag or hop it in shallow water, bath tub etc. the hook and weed guard will be on top.
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted November 13, 2012 Global Moderator Posted November 13, 2012 I'm also confused how you're fishing the hook down? Something is wrong if your hook is dragging bottom point down.
Super User *Hootie Posted November 13, 2012 Super User Posted November 13, 2012 As Paul Harvey used to say,"thats a strange". Hootie
ClackerBuzz Posted November 13, 2012 Posted November 13, 2012 i think you just have ur definition of "up/down" reversed. ur jigs are being fished correctly
Super User J Francho Posted November 13, 2012 Super User Posted November 13, 2012 I'm lost on this one....
Super User scaleface Posted November 13, 2012 Super User Posted November 13, 2012 Do you mean the the gap/hook opened a little or closed a little?
Super User WRB Posted November 13, 2012 Super User Posted November 13, 2012 Bo gave an answer so maybe there is a straight hook style football head jig on the market. There are football style slip sinkers. Maybe he is referring to curl tail soft plastic trailers with the curl pointing down? The traditional football jig uses a 90 or 60 degree bend jig hook and the football shape head always positions the hook upright, with the line tied to the hook eye. Tom
merc1997 Posted November 13, 2012 Posted November 13, 2012 tom i really do not know of any jigs on the market that are designed with the hook pointing down. i have tinkered with that design in the past, and the bottom jaw of a bass is not a good target to try to hook. i was trying to get the person to put a hook point against say a table top. then lift up the eyelet like it would follow your line on a hookset. one can easily see that the window for the hook point to penetrate the lower jaw is very minimal. the hook point almost instantly starts to travel away from the target area. i was just trying to get the point across that an upside down hook is not very effective unless there is some way that it will rotate all the way to vertical from the upside down position. the reason that i had experimented with an upside down hook is because when you do hook a big bass in the lower jaw, they are very easy to get in. by the bass's on resistance, they turn themselves upside down during the fight, and you you have very little trouble bringing them in after you get them upside down.
Super User Fishes in trees Posted November 13, 2012 Super User Posted November 13, 2012 Someone draw me a picture, I'm not following this. Gravity being what it is , and all that, I don't get how you'd fish a jig upside down. It is making my head hurt. I'd better go and wash my mouth out with beer, that will fix it. 1
Traveler2586 Posted November 13, 2012 Posted November 13, 2012 I need a photo of one of these jigs! Unless your making these yourself, I've never seen a commercial jig with the hook point down; it would snag on the bottom too easily. The only use for them would be while trolling in open water; and even at that they would snag anything they got near on deck. IMHO, I don't think there is a upside down jig, I'm from MO - show me
HookSetDon Posted November 13, 2012 Posted November 13, 2012 I'm completely lost on this one also.. the only way you can fish it so the hook point is pointing to bottom is if the eye on the lead head is opposite of the hook point. I highly doubt any manufacturer would opt to do it that way...
Super User J Francho Posted November 13, 2012 Super User Posted November 13, 2012 He's got to be referring to grubs on a ballhead.
Traveler2586 Posted November 13, 2012 Posted November 13, 2012 He's got to be referring to grubs on a ballhead. Even Ball Heads have the hook pointing up...... I think
Super User Bankbeater Posted November 13, 2012 Super User Posted November 13, 2012 Picture would help very much.
Super User WRB Posted November 14, 2012 Super User Posted November 14, 2012 I think we have been spoofed, hook pointed down, line and sinker, we swallowed it all! Or.....he is using a trailer hook up side down? Tom
fhsfish Posted November 15, 2012 Posted November 15, 2012 I'm completely lost on how this is working. I'm not a big jig fisherman (although its an area I need to improve on), but this makes no sense.
zip pow Posted November 15, 2012 Posted November 15, 2012 I'm glad I'm not the only one who doesn't understand.
Super User *Hootie Posted November 15, 2012 Super User Posted November 15, 2012 This is just STUPID........lol Hootie
