Super User *Hootie Posted November 10, 2012 Super User Posted November 10, 2012 Just sitting here in my room looking around at all the stuff I have and wondering, how did this happen? I have about 30 combos, from high end to low. Wouldn't even hazard a guess as to how many baits I have, bags and bags, and boxes and boxes. Not to mention my antique tackle collection, some 32 old reels, 40 old lures, some still in original boxes, and about a half dozen old steel rods. Got to part some of this stuff out. Or should I just keep it and continue to feed it and let it grow, or just stop where I am? I don't know guys, any suggestions? Hootie Quote
TRYTOFISH Posted November 10, 2012 Posted November 10, 2012 when you looked arounddid you smile? if you did , keep it! if not, ill take it! Quote

KDW96 Posted November 10, 2012 Posted November 10, 2012 I was in the same boat as you.Eventually i either sold alot of baits or donated to kids id see fishing of the dock some where with mom or dad. They get so excited. As far as reels and rods go,i just keepem.Because selling them dont really yield much profit because of shipping especially on rods.Dont beat yourself up over it,everybody here has this problem im sure. The Rooster Posted November 10, 2012 Posted November 10, 2012 I have this problem but in moderation. I have a few more combos than I use, but they never build up too much since I've given several away over time as new ones have came in. Some I now keep as loaner rods, too. With baits, I have way more than I need but not more than I can carry. I never use many of them but I'm of the mindset that one day I'll want a particular one and I'll have it. I continue to add to these. As for antique tackle, I have none. Not into collections that are not practically useful. I just see them as clutter. Once I had an old Pflueger Summit casting reel from back when they had cork wrapped on the spools that was given to me. I got tired of it sitting here and gave it to my neighbor. Quote
Super User kickerfish1 Posted November 10, 2012 Super User Posted November 10, 2012 If the folks from the crew of the TV show "Hoarders" shows up at your door that may be the time to stop. As long as you have the space I don't see an issue here. I would suggest selling things locally or online that you don't use any longer minus your antique collections. Quote
tholmes Posted November 10, 2012 Posted November 10, 2012 I too suffer from "Gear Acquisition Syndrome", otherwise known as GAS. Fishing gear isn't too bad, guitars, on the other hand.... Tom Quote
Super User LgMouthGambler Posted November 10, 2012 Super User Posted November 10, 2012 You can never have too much, but its hard when the wife tells you it is. Quote

Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted November 11, 2012 Global Moderator Posted November 11, 2012 I hang on to a lot of that stuff and loan it out to friends. I have way more gear than it looks like I have because my friends have a bunch of my combos on long term loans. In my experience if I sell them next time I go fishing I'll wish I had them. Quote

Yes Goose, a very good thing. I've given away a lot of tackle myself. Don't know if it's because I'm really generous, or just a lousy salesman,.....couldn't sell windex to a peeping tom. Hootie Quote
TNBassin' Posted November 11, 2012 Posted November 11, 2012 I have 3 combos and that's it. I don't get into having a rod for each bait, or a certain gear ratio reel for specific baits either. I like to have stuff that is an all around set up. Versatility for me is big when it comes to my gear. As far as tackle goes, I'm pickier about what I buy now. I'll have a bunch of stuff in my basket at BPS within the first 5 minutes, and I may walk out with half after thinking about what I'm buying. The bait monkey will bite every now and again still, but not as much as before. Quote
Super User Raul Posted November 11, 2012 Super User Posted November 11, 2012 When how much is too much ? Man don´t ask me ! I can´t give right answer, let´s put it this way: if it itches ---> scratch it until the itch goes away. Funny that you bring up the subject, I haven´t purchased a rod or reel in over two years and nowdays I´m getting the itch for a GLoomis crankbait rod, who knows for how long I can stand the itch before I scratch it. Maico1 Posted November 12, 2012 Posted November 12, 2012 Not sure what to much could be when it comes to fishing gear. However if you are starting to question yourself or you are starting to feel overwhelmed with what you have, then by all means thin the herd . On the other hand if you enjoy looking at what you have collected over the years then set up some displays of your collection. I think we all move some of what we have collected just not at the same pace that we buy it at. So when that happens there is nothing like giving it to a kid and watching their eyes bug out and that big smile on their face...... Quote
Super User SirSnookalot Posted November 12, 2012 Super User Posted November 12, 2012 Some of my inshore reels take a beating, 2 sorons and 2 stradics are acting up a little bit, this time I'm not going to send anything into service but replace the reels with new ones. Quote
dam0007 Posted November 12, 2012 Posted November 12, 2012 I try to give stuff I don't use away. Only prob is I only have so many friends and family members that fish a lot. Another prob is giving it away to people that will actually appreciate and make good use of said equipment. As far as whens enough, enough. I'm always for upgrading! Lol Quote
