Super User Fishing Rhino Posted November 9, 2012 Super User Posted November 9, 2012 It is common, at least around here for families who lost a loved one to request donations to this or that charity in lieu of flowers. Recently we have done as requested. But, here's the rub. We are now getting daily phone calls from these charities. Their gimmick is to receive the donation, then notify the family that a donation was made to said charity by (fill in the blank) in memory of the deceased. They then have your name, and the calls begin. From now on, when we make a gift to a charity it will be with a money order, noted in memory of so and so, but with no way for the charity to begin hounding us. Call me an old grouch, grumpy, or whatever you wish, but it's enough to discourage a person from trying to help out. Quote
Super User Nitrofreak Posted November 9, 2012 Super User Posted November 9, 2012 No, I feel the same way, back when my wife had cancer, we donated to cancer research, we have since dropped our donations and our land lines, the only way to donate should you feel compelled to do so after such hounding, would be to do it as you have put it, there are so many who have lost this battle so we just dedicate to the memory of all who have faught and continue to fight. Super User slonezp Posted November 9, 2012 Super User Posted November 9, 2012 Interested in buying a time share? Are you unable to make an anonymous donation? I'm sure there is a phone list traded, or bought and sold between charities. I am very selective with whom I donate to. It never fails though. If I make a clothing donation to Purple Heart, the calls begin from different clothing charities. I give monetary donations to 3 different orginizations thatl were involved in my deceased brothers life, the NRA, and no else gets a dime. Quote
Super User slonezp Posted November 9, 2012 Super User Posted November 9, 2012 No Joke Checked my email minutes after I typed this post and I have SPAM from a timeshare company. They're watching....... Quote
Super User SirSnookalot Posted November 9, 2012 Super User Posted November 9, 2012 Too my knowledge I haven't received a phone call from any charity I've donated to as a request by the family of the deceased, seems like a card is all I get. I contribute to some charities direct and I will get a card sometimes. The calls I get are from fund raising companies that are representing charities like the Fireman and Police and the conversation usually opens like this " hey thanks for your donation last year".......fact is I never donated. These charities get nothing , those fund raising companies keep much of the money as administration costs and little goes to the charity itself. Quote
Traveler2586 Posted November 9, 2012 Posted November 9, 2012 I have also gone through this; my wife, bless her hart, is a soft touch; but I let technology work for me - my phones are listed on the National Do Not Call Registery (https://donotcall.gov/register/Reg.aspx), and if some do call I give them a standard response of "Please take my information off your list" and then I program my phone to block further calls. What I haven't been able to stop is the political Daemon Dialers that use multiple phone numbers to make their calls. I consider Political calls as downright harassment. I haven't figured out how to stop all the unwanted mail asking for money; I do however enjoy all the freebies some send to try to make me feel guilty - FAIL. Quote

When we get junk mail, it gets put in one of the prepaid envelopes some of them supply, then gets mailed out. Quote

Super User Marty Posted November 10, 2012 Super User Posted November 10, 2012 What I haven't been able to stop is the political Daemon Dialers that use multiple phone numbers to make their calls. I consider Political calls as downright harassment. The Do Not Call registry exempts charities and politicians. However, I've gotten many illegal calls from commercial organizations. My theory is that they ignore the law because it's so hard to get caught and punished in some manner. I have made numerous donations to charities in lieu of flowers in the memory of a deceased, but I've been more fortunate than the original poster. I've gotten subsequent mailings and e-mails from many of the organizations but no phone calls to the best of my recollection. Quote
The Rooster Posted November 10, 2012 Posted November 10, 2012 We care for an elderly man who used to donate quite a bit of money to different charities. He has since stopped several years ago but he still gets POUNDS of mail each day from it. No kidding, one charity asking for money was actually for saving donkeys which were supposedly being abused from overworking them. Wow. He never donated to things like that but they still got his address. If we skip one day checking the P.O. Box then all we find is a note to come to the counter to receive a laundry basket full of mail. Quote
