doug deike Posted November 9, 2012 Posted November 9, 2012 I caught this in silver creek ny yesterday, was wondering if this is a king salmon or what???? Quote
DavePNW Posted November 9, 2012 Posted November 9, 2012 I think its a female pink salmon but I'm not entirely sure. The females get a green tinge to them closer to spawning. Quote
Super User J Francho Posted November 9, 2012 Super User Posted November 9, 2012 Not a pink. It's a king, in full spawning colors. Nice mudshark. Here's another, to compare: Here's a Coho: Here's where it gets hinky. Coho on the top, and Kingho hybrid on the bottom. Note the enlarged adipose fin between the dorsal and tail fin: 1 Quote
doug deike Posted November 9, 2012 Author Posted November 9, 2012 Thanks J, I knew i could count on you bro!! 1 Quote
Super User clayton86 Posted November 9, 2012 Super User Posted November 9, 2012 John where was that first one taken it looks really similar to a spot I fish the house in the back the tree over hanging by the rip rap part in the back even the way the rocks are on the left making the little shallow pool. If its not the spot im thinking of its a cookie cutter copy identical to a spot iv been fishing my whole life and caught hundreds of salmon and trout out of. Quote
Super User J Francho Posted November 9, 2012 Super User Posted November 9, 2012 The first one is from my neck of the woods. In fact, it's a "forbidden spot," though I occasionally get permission to fish it. Quote
Super User clayton86 Posted November 9, 2012 Super User Posted November 9, 2012 ah thats crazy if you go to Bloods rd in Lyndonville just off the parkway go down below the bridge to the east walk 150yds turn around you will see the same house and river "structure" as in your picture. If I was home id drive down there and take a pic to compare its seriously identical but its Johnsons creek iv been fishing since before I could walk. Quote
Super User Nitrofreak Posted November 9, 2012 Super User Posted November 9, 2012 Why is it that their jaw features look so much different if they are the same fish ? Not a trout guy at all, just wondering. By the way really nice fish guy's thanks for the pics !!!!!! Quote
Super User J Francho Posted November 9, 2012 Super User Posted November 9, 2012 Males develop a kype when they undergo hormonal and physiological changes just before the spawning run. http://adventure.howstuffworks.com/outdoor-activities/fishing/freshwater-tips/trout/trout-spawn1.htm Here is the difference between male rainbows and females, prespawn: Male, or "buck" Female, or "hen" And a spawning run male, with a kype jaw Finally, this is what a non run king looks like most of the year: Quote

SDoolittle Posted November 12, 2012 Posted November 12, 2012 I've never seen a King look so green. It's funny how the same species of fish can look so much different depending on where they were caught. This is what an Alaskan King looks like in spawning colors. Quote
alexczarn Posted November 12, 2012 Posted November 12, 2012 Sure am. I wish we had species like that around here. I'm jealous too...nothing like that here in Australia... Quote

Great Lakes salmon feed heavily on alewife, which is why they were stocked here. Sea run salmon feed heavily on prawn, which probably has a lot to do with the color differences. Quote
