I wonder would the St Croix Wild River Rods works for Catfish and Striped Bass?

Hmmm, they are generally pretty light on power to protect big fish lighter line, but make up for that limpness in with extra length, thereby having a longer, more proressive power section. I'm sure it would work, but it wouldn't be ideal.

I also been looking at the St Croix 8',6'' Med Action Casting Premier Surf Rod as well. If they still make em.

The line class ratings will give you the best clue as to what they can handle.

Do you plan on using the rod from the surf? The surf is probably the only place I'd be using a longer rod 10' or so, if your boat has a bimini top casting is easier with a 7 foot rod and you can always run the fish down. Stripers can get pretty good size, I would never target them with anything less than a mh 10/20 rod with a lure rating less than 2 oz., IMO that's bare minimum for that species.

If you haven't resolved this issue already, St Croix has 8 foot MH and H Tidemaster and Avid inshore salt water rods that would probably work better for your applications.. . I'd also look at the longest swimbait rods, even if that isn't what you are actually tossing.

Cabelas Euro style rod called Predator and similar steelhead rods have been highlighted in alot of In-fisherman dvds and magazine articles.  Theres lots about using those kind of rods in various Catfish In-sider guides.  I'd think the Predator would better balance a 6500 than the rest though I threw a guides that had a 5500 on it and it was perfect.

just get some ugly stik catfish and striper rods, dont make it more difficult than it has to be

Enough said. Ugly stick is a proven rod for big fish. You can get then in a lot of lengths and actions. Besides it will keep money in your pocket.

Most striper plugs are heavy enough as it is. I wouldnt want to spend any length of time chuckin' heavy bucktails or big topwaters on a heavy or tip heavy rod. I'd see where you'd want to invest in a lighter balanced rod to go with that heavy a reel, for you own enjoyment and comfort.

Just some thoughts as I own these rods and caught many hard fighting fish on them.  Mine are spinning but I believe available in casting as well.  Star stellar lite mh 10/20, max lure weight about 2 oz ( $99) with a stradic 4000, my main juvie tarpon rod.  Star stellar lite hvy 12/25 lb, max lure weight about 21/2 oz( $119) with a soron 60, cobia, aj's kingfish, bonita.  This last one is a sleeper, Shimano soujourn freshwater 12/25 max lure weight about 3 oz ($29), one of my cuda rods I use for casting my surgical tubes off jetties .  None of these rods are what I would call light, but each with the reels I have on them balance nicely and casting is fairly effortless and not tiring.  Blew my mind when I saw a couple of Long Islander striper guys down here Florida using Van Staals on that $29 soujourn.
