Fuel Question

I have a couple gallons of premix in a portable tank from a small outboard I need to get rid of. It's a year old and was treated with stabil last year. Could I put it in my truck with a full tank of gas to get rid of it or will it cause problems? Would I be better off putting it in the boat in the spring and it would just burn rich on oil for the first tank.

Pour it into the truck tank, assuming it's got at least a half tank or so. Your truck will never know the difference. If your boat also has a large fuel tank, you could do the same in the Spring. Personally, I would put it in the truck.

Usually it did not make a difference years ago, but todays vehicles and their systems are very sensitive with lamda o2 sensors and fuel injectors that are very sensitive to fuels that are less than quality grade stuff.

Manufactures are forcing fuel companies to make better quality fuel as the government required standards for fuel milage keeps increasing.

So depending on year make and model, It could potentially cause an issue, if it's an older truck it will most likely have no effect if mixed with a full tank of fuel, newer than 08 I would think twice about it, newer than 2010, I would not recomend it at all.

I have been in the automotive industry for 40 years now, the changes I have seen and the adverse effects chemicals have on fuel systems today are really sensitive to any change outside of the norm.

Toyota is noted for o2 sensor issues, it may have an adverse effect on their ability to read oxygen levels, I do not think that small amount would cause any harm to them, especially if you were to throw in 20 gallons of gas on top of that, it may cause your sensors to skew the readings and a loss of fuel milage may result as you are driving through that tank full of fuel, but otherwise if it does not effect or damage the sensors it should return to normal by the next tank, that would be the only issue I could see being probable.

If you still wish to try this, I would however suggest using half of what you have left with one tank and the other half with a second tank.

If it causes you concern, keep the fuel for a trip out next season, I have had fuel with added stabil for over a year in my boat, granted it's a 1990 and the carbs get serviced every season but the fuel was still reused and it worked just fine for me.

I googled two cycle fuel mix in automobile engines a couple of weeks ago, prompted by a similar post.

The main problem had to do with its effect on catalytic converters. But none said how much oil it would take to gum up a converter. Is it a tablespoon, a quart or what?

Not knowing for sure, I'd make sure it was treated with a fuel stabilizer and run it in my lawnmowers next year. They are carburetor engines, and have no sensors, injectors, or converters to foul up.

I do not remember any studies showing data from or for this issue Rhino, but I do have resources that can help me find such a thing if it is out there.
