Spinning Reel Ideas...

Hey guys just wanted some input on some decent spinning reels you guys like. Im already looking at getting the pfleuger president and the quantum antix.... Any of you use these or tried them before? And what other ones would you suggest?

All I have heard about the president is good stuff although I have never tried either of these reels. But I have heard good things about them, and I was just thinking about picking up a President myself.

The President is probably your best bet for smooth on a budget.

Own two pfluegers, one president and one templar. They are by far the best finish and durability for the price. Very smooth too.

U may also want to checkout the purist too, while very similar to the president it boasts higher grade bearings, sealed carbon drag and hybrid construction for $20 more. Dunno if all that is worth it to you. I have yet to touch one and play around with it.

The President is hard to beat from a bang-for-your-buck standpoint IMO.

I have a President, a Supreme and a Patriarch. All nice reels but you can't go wrong with a President for the price. I also have an older quantum with TiMag III bail trip. It is heavy but I absolutely love that litte reel.

You are on the right track with looking at Plueger or Quantum, but that is just my opinion, each to his own.

I have 3 Presidents; all the 6920 ultra-lite models and I have zero complaints.

I am not knocking other brands just going to speak on my personal exp./preference/usage.

Shimano Sienna $30 range (own 4000 series for light salt water, porgys, weakfish etc.)

Shimano Sonora $50 range (own 2500 series, my go to trout reel)

Shimano Symetre $100 range (own 2500 series, great for bass, walleye, perch, etc)

Shimano Stradic $200 range (own CI4 2500 my go to fave largemouth bass spinning reel, flawless)

I own all the above listed, they all serve different purposes and haven't had any issues with any of them.

There's a lot of brand loyalty when it comes to line, reels, rods, lures, etc.

I personally do not like the *feel* (very subjective) of the many Pflueger reels I've tested (including the President, and yes, some mounted on rods, some not). Same goes with BPS, Quantum, even Daiwa reels I've tried/used. The President does, indeed, get great reviews. So obviously worthy of your attention.

For me, Shimano reels felt the best, but not all of them. And of the many I have tried, the Stradics are my favorites. But I like the Symetre and Sahara as well. And don't forget Okuma reels!

Not dissing the other brands as they all have their adherents. This is my personal taste.

You should get your hands on several different brands at local sporting goods stores and determine which feels best in your hands. Definitely check the reviews, as I think you have, beforehand so you go in with some educated guesses.

The President may become your choice. I'm not trying to sway you to Shimano... Heck, I just bought a Daiwa Lexa 100 baitcaster that is winning me over with every cast, so I'm not married to one brand.

If I didn't want reels that weren't what I posted than I wouldn't have started the topic in the first place... Great info, my dad has a shimano baitrunner that he uses for stripers and it casts incredibly smooth. I also want an Okuma reel I want to try, I think its the Okuma Avenger B its only like $40. A decent inshore striper reel I use at the cape cod canal is a quantum blue runner which has an okay drag but definatley gets the job done for $40...

Always for me is what I plan on targeting, the rod I'm going to put it on (how it feels on the rod) and the budget. Pflueger president seems to be the initial point of inquiry, I have 5 Floogs, 2 of which I use in saltwater, the freshwater reels get a lot of use. Of every brand I own only my Pfluegers have never needed repair or service of any kind, each one is very smooth. In fairness one reason my freshwater reels have stayed in such good condition is due to what I'm catching with them, that said about any reel 50-$100 should last and perform as well given the nature of fish you'll be catching. Do not use your criteria for catching bluefish or stripers be a guide for a bass reel, it's totally different.....don't get overly hung up in the brand war.

I picked the CI4 (I have 3) for my deep water work because they are light and have a fast IPT despite the small spool on the 2500/3000 series. This can come into play when smallies come rocketing straight up to the boat in 30+ feet of water.

Although I am a founding member of the Shimano Posse, I have two President spinning reels (both were gifts to me) and I have to say they are great little reels. I fish with them way more than I thought I would. As said above, excellent bang for your buck.

I'm an Abu guy but the Okuma Trio has blown me away. That reel is super smooth and has an amazing drag. Best $50 you'll spend.

Here's a thought for budget minded fishermen requiring a decent quality, durable reel: Cardinal 101.
