Storing Equipment Question

Hi all. Been a member for a bit over a year. Got back into Bass fishing after a 15 year break due to illness and injuries. Fished Al, GA, NC and VA in the 80s and early nineties and then retired from the Army came to Northern MI and continued to Bass fish until I was unable to, long story short good meds and 8 surgeries later I picked up a used Stratus and some newer tackle and started up again in earnest this past summer. Seems tackle has evolved a great deal sense I quit and have some questions about storing reels. Prior to my hiatus I used Mono and in the south, fishing 12 months a year changed line a couple times a year. As fishing seasons up here are 5-6 months and I only fish 3-5 days a week, should I re-spool those reels that I have braided and fluorocarbon lines on. I've cleaned and oiled the reels for storage but wonder about storing them spooled. By the way, this is a great site for info and has really helped me with some of the newer techniques. Thanks for all the great information.

I've had braid on a few reels for a couple of years. I only use flouro for leaders but I would guess that the floro would get alittle springy after more than a few months on a reel even with some KVD Line & Lure conditioner.

I've removed some older braid when swithching to PP Slick 8 line and the old stuff still looks great. I've prety much only had experience with Power Pro line and some 832. I would assume most braids would with stand an idle season. I my experience, the line stores perfectly right on the reel it is spooled on. Keep the reel covers on or put the reels back in the box for better protection. Maybe give the rods and reels a wipe down with some Reel Magic spray if you have any laying around.

Well, the line you buy has been stored on spools for who-knows-how-long. But I never had a problem storing line on reel spools and the line can be good for years. I can speak for braid and mono, but have -0- fluorocarbon experience.

Here's a secret for braid. Don't tell anyone. When the braid starts looking old, spool it on another reel. Now the part that has been in the elements is now close to the spool and the "good" stuff that was near the spool is now in the strike zone.

I have more than 20 spinning reels with braid. The line on most of my reels is changed often due to what and where I'm catching, but 1 reel in particular has the same 20#PP that was originally spooled on it. My 4000 spheros is maybe 6 years old and the last year or so it's been my snakehead reel, as faded and ratty as this line looks it's still rock solid.

Out of harmful climate issues nylon lasts a long long time. Keep out of sunlight, ozone and extremes of temperature and humidity changes and baring nicks, cuts etc it lasts a very very long time. Think about what is said re nylon in land fills.

To add to the New Braid trick-if you have lost a little line over the years and want to get a full spool of braid back, tie on some mono and load your spool up. Now have someone hold the end of the line and walk it off until the spool is empty. Go back to the "holder" and retie the mono to the spool and load er up tight. Now you have new mono backing so the line dosen't spin on the spool and you end up with a full spool of unused braid.
