FillupD Posted November 2, 2012 Posted November 2, 2012 New or low count forum members. Beware of taking advice from the Good seller/buyers list post as quoted below. It states it is just a suggestion albeit a poor one, (in my case). Sales can go both ways, the new guy can be a stand-up guy and deliver as promised but as the quote expresses below, the tables may get turned and the new guy is the victim. Quoted from “Good seller/trader list” on the forum pinned posts. For the newer members trying to sell items with no BR 'feedback' built up....it should at least be considered that you ship your items first once a deal is reached. Shipping first will give the buyer peace of mind that they are not getting hosed and prove to other members that you are here to be an honest seller. Once the deal is complete, you will receive one positive point and your name will be added to the list. I've seen this work on other forums in the past. However, it's just a suggestion, not a "written in stone" rule. Message received from Buyer: Hi, I'm interested in the Calcutta. My concern is you have only 20 posts since 2007 and not one posted feedback, and it just makes me uncomfortable as I've been burnt in the past. I'm an active member and contribute daily, and have feedback. I would be willing to pay the full amount upon receipt of the reel. I can paypal the funds as a gift so there would be no fees to you. Also, who changed the spool bearings? Just want to be sure it was done using the correct tool to press out the shaft pin, as the shaft can become damaged if done with pliers. Let me know your thoughts. My Reply: I haven't been active in this forum very much at all. (Lurked alot) I changed the spool bearings and have done many of the pin removals, mostly on Daiwa reels. I found a pair of pliers that works perfect for them but I still would like to get the ones from BOCA, just haven't pulled the trigger on those yet. I've seen alot of your posts, I enjoy a lot of your comments. Send me your address and I'll send you the reel, if you don't like it, send it back. email me and I'll paypal the return postage to you or paypal my account to pay for the reel. I've been burned also, I know how you feel. Fair enough? Let me know what you want to do. What Happened: I sent the reel, the post office tracking recorded it as delivered. The buyer said when he got home, his mailbox was open and the only thing that was in it was wet letters. Communication was good between us and there was effort to track the reel down. At the end, no reel showed up and he offered to pay $150.00 of the $230.00 that was promised. I guess it is better than getting hung out to dry. It is a lesson that doesn’t sit well with me though. I believe the statement in the Good seller/trader list to even considering this sort of transaction should be deleted. A high an active post count probably should not factor in with sale transactions. Just my opinion and experience.
Super User slonezp Posted November 2, 2012 Super User Posted November 2, 2012 Maybe this should be taken up with the Mods and the buyer and not on a public forum 1
Ima Bass Ninja Posted November 3, 2012 Posted November 3, 2012 Well unless there is proof, then you have to take his word that he didn't receive the reel as he expressed. If that's the case, then him givin you any money at all is a huge act of kindness. Fact is you made an educated guess to assume the risk of doing business without a security net ( postal insurance) and their is no fault on the buyer until proof is established that he purposely defrauded you out of your material goods. It stinks and seems shady but it's how business works outside if a retail setting. We have all been burned at some point in our lives but hopefully this doesn't discourage you from doing business on this forum ,but alters the way you do it ,and encourage you to be a more active member.
Super User retiredbosn Posted November 3, 2012 Super User Posted November 3, 2012 The mailbox at the end of your driveway is considered federal property,(well technically the space inside) theft from it a federal offense. Call the post office ask for the postmaster, if he is no help then inform him that you will contact the postal inspector for that area. Postal inspectors are federal law enforcement agents with arrest powers. Just ask any group of kids caught smashing mail boxes! The postmaster will not want the inspectors snooping around, and will put a concerted effort to find out what happened. This way you are getting the information first hand. You may also mention to the buyer that if he received the package and says he didn't he is committing mail fraud, also a federal offense. Getting pro-active should resolve this quickly
FillupD Posted November 3, 2012 Author Posted November 3, 2012 I don't think he received it. He felt bad enough to at least pay some of the costs. I just thought I would point out that doing what I did should not have even been mentioned on the forum. Not all guys with low post counts are bad people and not all guys with high post counts are good people. I will say, it could have went worse for me. I could have got stiffed!
Super User Darren. Posted November 3, 2012 Super User Posted November 3, 2012 I'm just curious here, do you guys insure with USPS, FedEx, UPS, etc., the product you send? If so, doesn't that cover losses, failed delivery, etc.? Sorry if that's an ignorant question, I am honestly curious on this topic.
Super User Bassn Blvd Posted November 3, 2012 Super User Posted November 3, 2012 I send fedex/ups and insurance is free up to $100 and something like 2 or 4 bucks for and xtra 100. Tracking doesn't do too much, ask for signature confirmation next time. I don't think he received it. He felt bad enough to at least pay some of the costs. I just thought I would point out that doing what I did should not have even been mentioned on the forum. Not all guys with low post counts are bad people and not all guys with high post counts are good people. I will say, it could have went worse for me. I could have got stiffed! So what's your point? Something got stolen/lost in transit. What's that got to do with being a newbee or an old salt? 1
Super User SPEEDBEAD. Posted November 6, 2012 Super User Posted November 6, 2012 Insure, insure, insure. At least there may be some help if this type of thing happens.
Super User J Francho Posted November 6, 2012 Super User Posted November 6, 2012 What does non delivery have to do with the good seller list? BTW, USPS tracking stating "delivered" means it was delivered to that particular post office. I suggest the buyer go to his local post office and inquire.
Super User deaknh03 Posted November 7, 2012 Super User Posted November 7, 2012 J, that depends, my postman scans it at my house but some scan it at the PO.
Super User J Francho Posted November 8, 2012 Super User Posted November 8, 2012 I've never seen a letter carrier with any type of scanner up here. Only UPS or Fedex use tools like that.
wnybassman Posted November 8, 2012 Posted November 8, 2012 I've never seen a letter carrier with any type of scanner up here. Only UPS or Fedex use tools like that. When tracking USPS packages being delivered to me, I have never seen one labelled as "delivered" unless it was already here at my house. Sometimes that happens in as little as 15 minutes from the time the package is dropped off in my mailbox.
Super User J Francho Posted November 8, 2012 Super User Posted November 8, 2012 Wow, I usually see it as delivered a day or so after it's at my house.
Super User SirSnookalot Posted November 8, 2012 Super User Posted November 8, 2012 J, that depends, my postman scans it at my house but some scan it at the PO. Always gets scanned at my doorstep. I get USPS packages from overseas a few times a month, a signature is required, If I miss delivery it's at the PO next day. There have been times when my parcel was delivered but to the wrong address, the tracking has told me of the delivery so it was scanned at that delivery point. A trip to the PO and the information is given to me as who signed and the address is was delivered to.
Super User J Francho Posted November 8, 2012 Super User Posted November 8, 2012 Maybe my guy has one back in his truck, where erv that's parked. I only see him walking with a sack of mail. Then again, I live in the city, so it may be different.
Super User J Francho Posted November 8, 2012 Super User Posted November 8, 2012 Beware of taking advice from the Good seller/buyers list post as quoted below. I'm still not following how a mail screw up has anything to do with the good sellers list. The list is a record of previous transactions. That's all. Take it for what it's worth.
Super User A-Jay Posted November 8, 2012 Super User Posted November 8, 2012 A while ago I signed up for UPS My Choice. It's easy, free and convenient. Allows easy tracking and you'll get email notifications prior to delivery. Not the end all answer to all shipping woes but does add a little piece of mind. A-Jay
Super User rockchalk06 Posted November 8, 2012 Super User Posted November 8, 2012 If we are supposed to check it, why has it not been updated? I have completed 12 transactions on this forum all perfect and sent the PM's to the guy and not one has been added. I check every so often and nothing. The thread hasn't been updated since August of 2010. The guy hasn't been online since May of this year?
Super User J Francho Posted November 8, 2012 Super User Posted November 8, 2012 We actually are working on an issue with updating that thread. Any updates should be sent to myself, or any of the current moderators.
Super User J Francho Posted November 9, 2012 Super User Posted November 9, 2012 I've had a chance to hear both sides of this story, and I don't think this has anything to do with the good sellers list, reputations, post counts, etc., and has everything to do with an uninsured package being delivered as hurricane Sandy hit. An untimely set of circumstances. The buyer absorbed much of the losses here, though the seller took a pretty big hit here, too. I don't think there's much more to say about it, so I'm closing the books on this one.
