zildjian Posted November 3, 2012 Author Posted November 3, 2012 For my rod selection it's between the Dobyns Champion 7' MH 703c or 7' H 704c. This stinks! I don't know why I'm having such a hard time deciding between the two. Quote

Brian Needham Posted November 3, 2012 Posted November 3, 2012 the dobyns 3 power is perfect for 3/8 and 1/2 but I would not throw a 3/4 on my 3 power rods.....jmo. Quote

Jake P Posted November 4, 2012 Posted November 4, 2012 What Length, Action, and tip do you guys suggest for just purely spinnerbaits? I fish heavier spinnerbaits, 1/2oz and 3/4oz most of the time. I really need something that can handle 3/4oz and not feel like my rod is fighting it. Thinking... Duckett or Dobyns. Anyone have any suggestions? I have a Lews Tournament Pro Speed Spool 6.4:1 waiting to be paired up... Thanks guys. When I'm choosing a rod for a specific technique I look at the hook VS the lure itself. rod power and length will almost always depend on lure weight and where your fishing the lure. The action is determined by the hook(s) IMO. Spinnerbaits have single hooks like Jigs, T rigs etc. So for Spinnerbaits and most single hook presentations your going to want a fast or XF tip get a solid hookup. If your fishing heavier SB's then I would stick with a MH/F so your lures will be within the rods weight range. 7' for open water fishing. 6'6" for target fishing so you can cast more accurate. The Rooster Posted November 8, 2012 Posted November 8, 2012 Nobody mentioned that a 3/4 oz. spinnerbait will actually weigh well over 1 full oz. the rated weight is just in the amount of lead used to make the head. Blades, wire, hook, and skirt will add a good bit more. That may help you decide what rod to cast them on. Up until now I've been using a 6'6" MH/F rod for all of them up to 1/2 oz. rated (actual weight of 1/2 oz. bait is 7/8 oz., I weighed them to see). I just bought a H/F rod that I can't wait to try them with though. Feels like it will give better hook setting power in heavy cover. It will also be a jig rod, too, so not dedicated to spinnerbaits only. Quote
zildjian Posted November 8, 2012 Author Posted November 8, 2012 Very nice! I just bought a Dobyns champion 704c. 7' heavy action Fast tip. Just came in the mail. Can't wait to use it. Thanks again to everyone for all your help for me to choose what I needed. -zildjian Quote
BigMoneyGrip Posted November 8, 2012 Posted November 8, 2012 I use a 7' Veritas H/XF and a Cronarch E with 17lbs fluoro. It works nice with 3/4oz and 1oz. Quote
Mike__D Posted November 18, 2012 Posted November 18, 2012 For spinnerbaits i like a 7 foot MH fast action rod. The veritas is really nice for the price. They fish stout so tossing a 1/2 or 3/4 oz bait shouldn't be a problem. mike d Quote
