Spinnerbait Rods...

What Length, Action, and tip do you guys suggest for just purely spinnerbaits? I fish heavier spinnerbaits, 1/2oz and 3/4oz most of the time. I really need something that can handle 3/4oz and not feel like my rod is fighting it.

Thinking... Duckett or Dobyns.

Anyone have any suggestions?

I have a Lews Tournament Pro Speed Spool 6.4:1 waiting to be paired up...

I throw spinnerbaits on any rod I would throw a jig or t-rig with. 3/8's and up on a MH/fast, less than 3/8's M/fast, and on the very odd and rare occasion I use a super small spinner bait, like an 1/8th oz or something, I use a M/fast spinnng rod, and on the equaly rare and odd occasion when I slow roll one, I use my deep cranking rod. You didn't mention St Croix as one of your rod choices, but just FWIW a MH/Fast Croix with a good reel ( I use Shimano's) will handle 3/4 oz baits no problem.

I don't know of any other technique where there is more difference of opinion on what is or what ain't a decent spinnerbait rod. I know I'm way north of $1000 in the search of a spinnerbait rod that I really like.

I'll find one I kind of like, fish it for a while, then find another one and so it goes. For a long time I liked the All Star IM 10 6'8" Zell Rowland spinnerbait rod. Those aren't readily available anymore and All Star is owned by Shakespeare now so the quality isn't the same at all. They used to have a lifetime warranty and now they don't.

Currently I'm using a 6'9" Carrot Stick Wild Black rod. I'm liking the micro guides on that rod. I've got a 7' Kistler small swimbait special that works good for 1/2 oz spinnerbaits. I still have a couple of the above mentioned All Stars that I work into the line up from time to time.

Still, it is a good bet that this time next year I'll have one or two different spinnerbait rods than what is in the current line up.

I know for crankbait fishing glass rods are more ideal IMO. But what about spinnerbait rods? Glass or graphite?

I throw 3/8 and 1/2 oz spinnerbaits on a Dobyns 733c

paired with a lews TP you can really chunk a 1/2 spinnerbait.

if you are throwing more 1/2 to 3/4 I would go to the 734c.......... but I dont really know cause I have NO experience at all with 3/4 oz spinnerbaits.

I'm in same boat as you. I have had great success with M/F but I would think M/Moderate might be better. I'm all ears to what people have to say.

Do you guys think a 7' or 7'3" heavy action with fast tip is good for 1/2oz and 3/4oz Spinnerbaits?

Or should I do Medium/Heavy Action with Fast Tip? Just trying to figure out what would be more suitable for heavier spinnerbaits. As of now I'm throwing these spinnerbaits on my 6'9 Medium Heavy Duckett Micro Guide, and it can't handle 3/4oz well. Not sure if I should over power it with a Heavy Action rod or just get a longer Medium heavy action.

Any thoughts?

IMO a fast tip graphite rod is a must, as for power my MH St Croix Sweeper Spinnerbait Rod handles big spinners fine, but I don't know how Ducketts power ratings compare.

7' m/f for most spinnerbaits. Specifically avc70mf

7' mh/f for larger ones. Avc70mhf

Fast tip to set the single hook. Moderate for trebels.

ducketts m 7'0 was more tippy than my dobyns 733 and I feel it had less backbone as well.

I would say comparing the dobyns to duckett, go up 1 power if you get a duckett........other brands I have no clue.

Most of my spinnerbait fishing is shallow short casts to targets and use a 6' med or MH with a fast action. Usually 15# > line

i use 12# line........but know guys that use 17#

I dont fish heavy cover much so the 12 does what I need it to, plus I can throw the lighter line better........I would say if you are doing a bunch of 3/4 stuff you wouldn't want less than 15#, but I defer to the people with more experience......

IMHO.........no, not for the 3/4 oz baits you want to toss. Unless the water you fish is cover free. If your going to run straight fluorocarbon I would run at least 15lb, and 17 or 20 if the cover is really nasty. I don't use fluoro as a main line, I use braid with, most of the time tied straight to the spinnerbait, it's not a finesse presentation where line visability matters much. 20lb on my M power/fast action rod for the lighter spinnerbaits I toss (3/16, 1/4 oz.) and 30lb on my MH power/fast action rod with the heavier baits. If the cover is real nasty I will throw them on another MH/fast rod I have with 50lb braid.

My spinnerbait set up is a 6' 6" MH/F St. Croix LTB with a 6:4.1 Lew's Speed Spool with 15lb copoly line, fishes all standard sized spinnerbaits perfectly.

90% of my spinnerbait fishing is structure fishing. I fish exclusively Northstar spinnerbaits and 99% of those are 3/4. The primary rod I fish them on is a Cumara 7-0H Fast. The second rod that I fish them on is a Cumara 6-9MH Xfast. Typically that rod comes in when I'm fishing in ten feet of water or less. The third is the Cumara 7-11 MHXF. That rod is primarily the rod I use around grass and in wood, when I am fishing longer casts and targeting fish from a Lon distance in clear water. It's also the rod that I use for 1/2 ounce and smaller blades.

The 7H is my preference for all around, typically. I can use it in many different situations for many different baits with no issue. I also prefer that rod for keeping fish pinned, it is more than powerful enough to drive the big hooks home, but it is limber enough to keep them buttoned. I really, really like it for fishing blades in deep water because it is sensitive enough that I can tell what's going on. I can't do that with a glass rod.

I would opt for a H/F rod for 3/4 oz blades with 15lb Yozuri Hybrid.

I use a 7' MH/F Mojo Bass with a Curado 200G6 spooled with 12# Yo Zuri Hybrid. I don't throw anything heavier than 1/2 oz though. If you want to throw up to 3/4 oz I think you use up to a H, but a MH would probably do fine IMO. It all depends on how "heavy" or "medium heavy" the rod actually is... As far as line, I wouldn't go anything less than 12# and probably go closer to 15#.

Yeah Im on the edge of choosing a 7' Heavy fast tip Dobyns over a medium heavy. I have a lot of Dobyns rods, and just love them. I like the size of the 7' rod I have, It just sits in my forearm very comfortable for all day cranking. But my 7'3" dosen't fit my forearm as good if i were to use it for all day cranking.

So I def want a 7' Dobyns for my spinnerbait rod. I'm not going to buy a duckket rod for this setup, but I love the micro magic guide line of duckkets.

Just don't know how the dobyns medium heavy will handle the 3/4oz Spinnerbaits.

I don't think the heavy fast would be overkill though.

I'm weird I use my crankbait set ups for my spinnerbaits. I also use a reel with no more than 25ipt.
