Curado 200G Vs. 200E Revisited

Back in Feb. I posted this, wondering why one over the other. Got a lot of feedback, some of it pretty heated.

I had no experience with either reel, so I was curious. I have since bought 2 Curado 200G's, and I am quite

pleased with them. Remember, I have never had my hands on the E series Curado. I was just wondering then,

since nine months have passed since my first post, has any one's opinion changed. Do you now think the G's are pretty

good, not as bad as you thought, or suspicions confirmed, not worth it.

I really like mine, don't have any complaints so far.

The G series is a fine reel, is just not the same quality as the E. Are they worth it? That is up to the buyer. For my money I would wait and put my money on the Chronarch E, not because the G series are dogs, but they just aren't as good as the E series.

Actually I did also purchase 2 Chronarch 200E6's, {darned LMG}. I am quite pleased with these reels also.

If you have new Chronarchs then you know exactly what a Curado E is/was lest for the slightly different gear ratio.

That's where I'm at also.

The Curado G-series reel can stand alone quite well on it's own merits...but why-oh-why did they change the frame to the larger "Canaen" design?! I would have been OK with the other downgrades (plastic star drag, less bearings in the handle, etc), but please leave the basic form factor the same. My $0.02.

For me it's going to be E series all the way...Curado, Citica, Chronarch...

when the curado D came out, people were whining about it and pining for the old curado B. when the E's first came out, i remember sentiment that the Es weren't as solid, blah, blah, blah as the Ds.

personally, i don't understand the frustration...if people want a curado E, just buy a used one or spring for the chronarch E. i remember when the Es first came out, bantam1 said that they should have been priced at $199 but that they had worked out a killer pricing contract on their manufacture and were able to price it $20 lower. the chronarch E is basically a curado E at the price it should've been all along. this is not to say that i like the curado G form factor because i don't. and, even though i've never had a plastic drag star break on me before, i still prefer the feel of aluminum. therefore, the chronarch E gets the nod from me...besides, i like the white pearl paint job much more than the dark green.

I read a review on youtube that the owner of both a curado g and chronarch e stated he is realizing the G is a better reel

when I asked why he replied

"Just after using both for a year the G Series is better smoother and casts more consistent.. I love both and chronarch prob casts a little bit farther but not much."

used a G today, reel casted well and felt smooth to me, would buy one on the low....Im not a reel snob tho

To indicate that the G is not of the same build quality as the E is completely incorrect . The g is possibly higher quality than the E overall . You must, however, keep in mind that they are different reels entirely . The newer machines and equipment at the Malaysian location are calibrated to tighter tolerance and are said to be more accurate than the Japanese . What the primary difference is, is not quality of the reel, but the build of the reel itself . The G is a very good reel, missing nothing in terms of functionality and operation . There is no problem with the reel in any situation that I have encountered thus far . While the E is a touch smoother because of  the additional bearings, it doesn't change the quality of the reel .

What I have noticed is the same as many state, the G is more consistent and far less temperamental . It seems to be more accurate in setting from one reel to the next . I have nearly a dozen of both, as well as Ch200G and I have the inclination that the quality of the Curado G is a touch better than that of its counterparts . 

Remember, quality of build and materials does not equal the number of bearings in a reel, which is what so many people equate quality to .

I have Curados  back to the first of the B series and frankly all the reels perform fine so long as they are serviced properly.  Fit is very important so it's a matter of reel, rod and hand combined to the best grip for the particular angler.  When the grip is one that is locked down and comfortable the fisherman can work a bait all day in comfort.  I've heard angler's refer to reels as "disposable" but the funny thing is even the less expensive ones perform fine if kept up and cared for.  Shimanos low profile midrange reels the Citica and Curado are wonderful long term tools.  Keep them up and they will be reels you can pass on to the grandkids.

I sold all of my old Curado's and bought E7s.  I don't crank much but when I did the 7s weren't appropriate.  I was in a local tackle shop and stopped to look at a G5.   The owner said he couldn't sell Shimanos well in his shop because of the price and if I wanted to take the last one off his hands he'd give me a good deal.  I wound up getting the reel and a 6.5 M rod for cranking.

 

The only thing I can say for this reel is, the thing out casts all of my E7s.  I really have to watch what I am doing or I wind up with my cranks on the bank.

I noticed it cast really well when using my friends reel for a bit using a small spook with 80lb braid. It def felt way smoother than my citica e, his citica g felt smoother to me too, maybe something is up with my E from the factory *shrugs*

I have E's and 2 G's I prefer the way the E frame feels in my hand but there is nothing wrong with the G. I wish they would offer a 50G though.

lots of different opinions on the new Curado's. I have 7 Curado cu201's and 2 cu101b's (all lefties) and I'll stop using them when they fall apart. best Curados ever made.

That "plastic" star drag is actually a quality composition material which Shimano strengthens with successive models.

99% of my fishing these days is with Citica E 201's, love them. Last year when Bass Pro had there spring sale and offered money off new reels if you traded in old reels combined with Shimano offereing a mail in $30 rebate on the new Curado G's I picked up 4 of them. After playing with them while watching tv for a few nights I just started to not like them. I didn't feel they were as smooth as my Citica E's and also didn't feel they were made as well. Now I'm Shimano 100%, they're all I fish reel wise but something about these Curado's just didn't sit right with me. I never mounted one on a rod or even put line on one, they just sat in their boxes in my house. About a month ago I sold all 4 of them, NIB to a guy that I see at the boat ramp. I've not heard from him since to find out what he thinks of them. His boat was full of the first gen Curado's so I'm sure he either loves them or hates them compared to the originals.

 

I've owned and fished a 201SF, 201DHSV, and 51E and loved all these but there was just something about the G's I just couldn't get past. As I said though I judged them without ever making a test cast so I may have made a bad move here, I don't know. I've been 100% satisfied with my Citica E's so I thought these new Curado's would be the same but they just weren't. I really really really wish I'd picked up as many of the D models as I could have gotten my hands on when they were on sale cheap before the launch of the E series. They are my absolute favorite Curado's so far, I don't mind the extra weight at all. Those things are total beasts IMHO.
