bassh8er Posted October 31, 2012 Posted October 31, 2012 Any link to info or videos on doing this? I keep hearing about it but have no idea what it means. Thanks for all the help guys. Quote
BASSHUNTER1961 Posted October 31, 2012 Posted October 31, 2012 Remove the spool bearings from the reel and soak them in a jar of mineral spirits or acetone. I soak them for 20-30 minutes and gently shake the jar every 5-10 minutes. Remove the bearings from the jar, and place them on a paper towel to dry. Add ONE drop of oil, and place them back in the reel. You will be amazed. Quote

I have a small ultrasonic cleaner ($30 @ harbor freight)...I put the bearings and acetone in a baby food jar, close the lid, fill the US half full of water and put the jar in the cleaner and run it. I do this cycle several times...replacing the acetone and running the US until the acetone is no longer cloudy. When the cycle completes and the acetone is clear, you can consider your bearings "flushed". Quote

craww Posted October 31, 2012 Posted October 31, 2012 Agreed the first time (especially if its your 50e which come FULL of junk) I'd do it overnight and change fluid at least twice. I use the containers contacts soak in. I like to spray them with keyboard cleaner and spin them between fluid changes. Make sure their dry before you relube. Quote
TNBassin' Posted October 31, 2012 Posted October 31, 2012 Instead of fooling with that pin on the spool shaft, just take an old pill bottle and fill it up enough to where the acetone/lighter fluid will submerge the spool shaft bearing. It sounds janky, but it's much better than trying to get that pin out and risk denting the spool or nicking the shaft. After they are clean, place them on a pack of dessicant . 1 Quote

Maico1 Posted October 31, 2012 Posted October 31, 2012 Shimanos dont have spool bearings on the shaft. Check out the bearing on the spool......... If you have a reel with a spool bearing you should get a set of spool pin pliers like these.... http://www.bocabeari...PINPLIERS-Tools Quote

Super User J Francho Posted October 31, 2012 Super User Posted October 31, 2012 Shimanos dont have spool bearings on the shaft. They were one of the first to put it there. I believe the D series was the end of that practice Quote

Baby food jars were the best thing I discovered for small parts. They're cheap and readily available. Quote
Delaware Valley Tackle Posted October 31, 2012 Posted October 31, 2012 Acetone's about the best solvent I've found for bearings. Brake or carb cleaner woks well and you may have some already. U.S. cleaners are a nice perk but a little overkill for a a reel here or there. Quote
Super User J Francho Posted October 31, 2012 Super User Posted October 31, 2012 Baby food jars work well for parts that need to soak in cleaner or solvent. A muffin pan is the best thing I've found for keeping everything in order. Quote

But whats with the Camera Lense...... Quote
Super User J Francho Posted October 31, 2012 Super User Posted October 31, 2012 LOL, I had the 50mm on the cam, and switched it out for the 17-40L. Quote
Super User OkobojiEagle Posted October 31, 2012 Super User Posted October 31, 2012 Can't say I've ever had a need for my tack hammer while cleaning reels. oe Quote
Super User J Francho Posted October 31, 2012 Super User Posted October 31, 2012 The tack hammer and punch gets the spool pin out after I use the .RM. custom made pliers. Just takes a tap. Quote

I buy bearings by the hundreds for the Hawg Handle and all those get cleaned, dried, lubed before assembly. The ultrasonic cleaner is nice, if it fits in your budget though. Besides doing an outstanding job on the bearings, fill it with warm water and a little bit of Simple Green and it cleans all the non-metal components on the reel with one quick, easy pass. Quote

Yeah I always use my US cleaner for all of the other parts. Great with warm water and Simple Green. Saves from having to scrub too much. Quote
