CJIII Posted October 27, 2012 Posted October 27, 2012 I try this new pond out today it has a lot of largemouth bass and panfish it in. The largemouth bass is feeding on the shad thats in the pond and I am having a hard time catching the largemouth bass. I was using my favor lure a 4'' purple color worm. I also try a spinnerbait but no sucess. Do you guys have any suggests? Quote
Super User Tuckahoe Joe Posted October 27, 2012 Super User Posted October 27, 2012 Try a crankbait. My last 10 or so fish have all been on cranks. Maybe try and find one thats shad colored. I haven't had much luck with worms lately 1 Quote
CJIII Posted October 27, 2012 Author Posted October 27, 2012 I have a Falcon Original Cast 6'6" Med Hvy would that work with crank baits? I use a Abu 4600C3 as the reel. Quote
CoBass Posted October 27, 2012 Posted October 27, 2012 If they're feeding on shad, try something more shad like. I would try a lipless crank like a red eye shad and if they weren't willing to chase that, I'd switch to a suspending jerk bait that could be worked slower. 1 Quote

Im no expert on what kind of rod to use with which bait, but I don't see why it wouldn't work. Im just using a cheap shakespeare rod and its been working just fine for me. It's also 6'6'' and med hvy. Quote
Super User Sam Posted October 27, 2012 Super User Posted October 27, 2012 1. Lipless crankbait like a Rat-L-Trap in chrome with blue or black back.Use the smaller size. 2. Shad Raps in silver with black or blue back. 3. We need to know the water clarity for plastics. In the meantime try Junebug, green pumpkin and watermealon to see what they want. 4. Poppers on topwater early AM or late evening. 5. Senkos rigged wacky. 6. Drop shot with 4-inch finesse worm. 7. Shaky head with a green pumpkin or Junebug trick worm. 8. Carolina rig. 9. Keep throwing your crankbaits. Sexy Shad may be the color they want. Experiment with all of your baits and your techniques. Your rod is fine with everything mentioned above. Use 12 pound test line on baitcasters and no more than 8 pound test line on spinning rigs. Bring a needle nose pliers to remove the hooks when needed. Remember, if they are feeding on shad then use a shad colored moving bait. Quote
CJIII Posted October 27, 2012 Author Posted October 27, 2012 I dont have a spinning rig I need to get one. Quote
Super User scaleface Posted October 27, 2012 Super User Posted October 27, 2012 If they are busting shad they should bite. Just keep throwing at them. Try half of a Senko, Wave Tiki or other stick worm on a light jig head or even a Roadrunner head. That should get you bit. Quote
Super User roadwarrior Posted October 28, 2012 Super User Posted October 28, 2012 The Rage Tail Menace is on fire! Rig it vertical with a 1/4 oz bullet weight. Quote
Nick86794 Posted October 28, 2012 Posted October 28, 2012 I dont know about anyone else, but I've been slayin bass on buzz baits these past 2 months. Just casting it parallel to the shoreline and slowly bringing it in so the blades jsut barely tick the surface. 1 Quote
haydenf96 Posted November 5, 2012 Posted November 5, 2012 Lipless crankbait: Strike King Redeye shad Blue and Chrome Topwater like poppers spook and buzzbaits early morning or late evening. Wacky and Texas Rigged senkos Even try a dropshot Heck even throw in a A-Rig! Quote
Super User flyfisher Posted November 6, 2012 Super User Posted November 6, 2012 Bass busting on the surface? My go to is a fluke in whatever color mimics the baitfish cast past the edge of the pod and work it fast and right as you get near the pod kill it and let it fall.....if that doesn't get a strike keep trying...... Amoore9900 Posted November 6, 2012 Posted November 6, 2012 I agree lipless cranks...our lake is filled with shad all over and we have killed them on square bill crankbaits...strike king kvd 2.5...bandit 200 are the ones we use... Quote
Knightiac Posted November 12, 2012 Posted November 12, 2012 I'd try a small spinnerbait with a trailer hook. Just cover as much water as possible, if you see action, then slow it down in that area with whatever your favorite choice may be. Or keep throwing the spinnerbait, your call. If you don't run across any action, toss a nice long worm with a lot of tail action, shakey head. I'd prefer a 6" Berkley Bottom Hopper. If you fish slow enough, you will catch something. I fish a couple ponds that only have 1-2lbs and they prefer smaller plastics. In that case I switch to a 4" If you get bites on the shakeyhead but can't connect, either downsize the worm or switch the worm over to a texas rig on an EWG hook. Hooksets are easier. Quote
Super User Bankbeater Posted November 12, 2012 Super User Posted November 12, 2012 If the shad are on top, and you can reach them try throwing a jig out there into the middle of the shad and letting it fall through the school. Quote
PABASS Posted November 15, 2012 Posted November 15, 2012 My go-to baits if bass are feeding on top are Pop-R and a BuzzBait. Now if you know where the bass are then a Pop-R for sure, if you need to locate them a BuzzBait might work quicker. Once you weed out the active ones I would change over to a crank bait KVD 1.0 Sexy Shad and hold on.. Quote
