Problems Casting Jerkbaits On Baitcaster.

Hey guys,

I have absolutely no problem with baitcasters. I have them on all my rods, and love them. I only have one problem with only one type of lure. Its only casting a hard bodied jerkbait. I only use one combo for this setup. 6'6" Medium action Micro Guide Duckett with Quantum Smoke Reel with 15lb Bass Pro Shops 100% Flurocabon. And no matter how high I set my brakes and tension knob I get over runs. But if I tighten it to much to stop any overruns I can barely cast my lure 10ft.

And this is only with hard bodied jerkbaits. Any tips?

My guess is you are trying to whip them to hard. Try with your brakes on your looser setting and finesse it out there. I bet you will be surprised!

How heavy is the jerkbait? If its real light, you may want to drop to a lighter line, say 8-10#. Also, fluoro is a pain in the butt as far as manageability, try a different line if going lighter doesnt help.

If they are Rapala, they're probably on the light side compared to everything else on the market. That would be my guess. Any other brand of jerkbait usually will cast a mile.

I will X2 Jeff's recommendation. A little more finesse, creates a lot less of a mess.

A lot of jerk baits like the ratting rogue and pointers have a couple balls inside them. The balls roll to the head in the water and give that nose down attitude. When you cast they should roll to the tail and the bait should fly tail first. It takes a slower steady motion to make the balls stay in the tail. It's like the difference of throwing football with a tight spiral vs. throwing it sideways.

I also think 15lb line is too heavy.

Put some 8# mono on that reel and you will be very surprised in the difference.

15# fluoro is too heavy for jerkbaits. I use 10# CXX and sometimes will drop to 8#. I don't really like fluoro for jerk baits, especially when using long pauses. It sinks too fast, and I lose that connected to the bait feel.

Yeah I did try that and at least every other cast id get an overrun. And I would just get frustrated and turn the brakes all the way up and then no overrun but no distance.

As said, 8 to 10 pound mono. Mono for treble hook baits to get the stretch.

Cast easier and try the underhand roll cast and remember to snap your wrist.

try a couple of drop of reel oil on the spool bearings, this will slow down the spool speed. Also lightly oil the brake pins.

I disagree. There is great benefit to reapplying after each trip, especially with some less manageable lines. It's a great idea to pretreat the filler spool as well, especially if you buy bulk spools.

agree. Also, lighten up the line. 10lb is plenty

Ten pound test is perfect for most jerkbaits, anything under 3/8 of an ounce I use spinning gear and 15 pound power pro braid and a 12 pound fluoro leader. It's your line.
