Super User Root beer Posted February 28, 2010 Super User Posted February 28, 2010 I know this topic been popping up since KVD won the classic, but I'm not here to discussed brands. In past I've always thrown lipless crankbaits specifically Bill Lewis into shallow water while running it on the bottom (sandy bottoms) and I've caught few chunky fish doing so. Usually I just cast and retrieve. When I read this article: http://www.bassresource.com/fishing/Rat-L-Trap.html and how KVD won the classic, it was interesting how they was fishing it yo-yo style and sweeping it through water then let it flutter. To those of you that have done these technique. What time and place did this technique have? (referring to specific conditions and fishing structures) When you are using yo-yo pattern or anytime you are letting the bait flutter, which lipless crankbait designed has a better flutter? Do you think brand A has a better flutter than brand B, but brand B is better for retrieving than A? If so, care to share which design is better for such technique? ;D This spring, I think I'm cast to shallow first, if no fish, then I'm cast it out to medium and deeper water on the same bank. Quote
Super User roadwarrior Posted February 28, 2010 Super User Posted February 28, 2010 If you are looking for "The One", try the XCalibur Xr50, Chrome Blue/ Orange. http://www.xcaliburtackle.com/rattle.asp : Quote
Super User 5bass Posted February 28, 2010 Super User Posted February 28, 2010 I think the big deal about the Red Eye shad is that when you apply the yo-yo retrieve, the bait will shimmy (as swimming) on the fall as well as on a regular straight retrieve. Thats probably why KVD/Strike King designed it that way because not many other brands will swim/shimmy very effectively on the fall. Quote
bmadd Posted February 28, 2010 Posted February 28, 2010 I really like the sweep and pause, crank and stop, and yo-yo techniques in pre-spawn and in the fall around grass. In the pre-spawn, I'll fish it in many different spots. Spawning flats or small creeks leading to spawning areas. I'll also throw it along banks of creek mouths leading back to spawning areas. I'll fish it around any cover I can, grass, lay downs, stumps, etc. Sometimes the fish want it jigged, sometimes they want it swept up and then to flutter back down, or sometimes they just want a slight pause thrown into a steady retrieve. That pause, depending on how long you stop, can make the bait either just hover before moving again, or it can flutter before taking off again. Anytime you can knock that bait into something is a plus. Those changes in the bait's action are what often triggers strikes. The strike could occur as soon as you stop/flutter/make contact or it could occur right when you start your retrieve again. It takes a little figuring out, but most of the time once you find that first bite you can mimic it all day and really load the boat. As for my personal preference, I like the Cotton Cordell Super Spot in Rayburn Red or Chrome/Black back Quote
Bigdawg48 Posted February 28, 2010 Posted February 28, 2010 I loved the Diawa TD Vibration lipless lures. They dont have that particular brand anymore but you can still find them around on the web. They also have another class on the market. Spro also has a good lipless Quote

Will that work? ;D bmadd, when you are jigging it, after it touch bottom, how long will you let it sit, before popping it again? Quote
bmadd Posted February 28, 2010 Posted February 28, 2010 I don't like to let mine rest very long. I normally like to get it moving just as soon as I feel it make contact again. I don't like to let mine rest very long on any of those retrieves really though. Quote
Super User Tin Posted February 28, 2010 Super User Posted February 28, 2010 Spro also has a good lipless Senko77 and I will each send you a few if you edit your post and take this down. lol Quote
SkilletSizeBass. Posted February 28, 2010 Posted February 28, 2010 I'm going to give lipless a much better effort this year than in the past. I've picked up several different brands, most of the ones discussed so far here, and I really need to learn and experiment with various retrieves. For the most part I've just always just burned them over weedy flats. Quote
jdw174 Posted February 28, 2010 Posted February 28, 2010 I always fish lipless baits with a stop 'n go retrieve. The biggest majority of my strikes comes either on the pause or right at the instant I start moving it again. Quote

kyron4 Posted February 28, 2010 Posted February 28, 2010 I throw a Bass pro TS rattle shad about 80% or more , fishing it all year. It will catch everything that swims; SM bass, LG bass, white bass, drum, walleye, sauger, crappie, catfish and even a few 'gills. There only $3 so i can afford to lose a few in the rocks and snags.
