Anyone Keep Their Gear In Their Car?

Ive been thinking about keeping my gear in the trunk of my car. I assume in the summer it might not be the best idea. Im thinking the extreme heat would be bad for the line as well as the soft plastics and possibly even the glue used on hard baits. But with winter coming on, would the extreme cold be a problem? I don't wanna ruin my stuff but I like the idea of having it ready to go at a moments notice. Any thoughts?

I always have at least a backpack rod and reel with a few Beetle spins under the seat. I use to drive a van with rod racks in it. I had 6 rods at all times.

Here in the Phoenix area between Oct and April yes. May through Sept no, stuff melts.

Hi there,Joe..................I normally keep three rods a backpack and pair of knee high boots in the bed of my truck. It's covered with a fiberglass tonneau cover....I've not had any trouble with my gear, other than the rods sliding around if a deer bolts across the road.............I corrected that by installing a ratchet strap across the bed with velcro strips attatched, to anchor my rods. I can't imagine that you'd have any negative consequences from leaving your gear in the trunk.

Same here, I'm in South Florida. I keep all of my saltwater lures and gear plus a few bass baits soft and hard in the trunk of my car. My rods and everything else, are stored in my garage, gets hot there too, never a problem or anything melting.

I keep couple of rods and some Plano 3700's with tackle in the back of my pickup. Been there all summer and I haven't seen any issues. The bed is covered with a tonneau cover.

For the a rod holder I used 2 adjustable shower rods with the foam pipe insulation covering them. I secure them with the bunge cords that have the ball on the end.

I'm in the midwest were we had to many 100+ days this summer and I have not seen any issues.

I live in Missouri, and I keep a large quantity of gear locked up in my fishing truck all the time. I do keep my boat and fishing truck locked up in a shed, out of the sun, whenever I'm not using it. Never had a problem.

When I go fishing mid-summer I have sun shades for most of the windows in my truck than do a good job of keeping out the heat somewhat.

i got 5 bait casters and 5 2 piece spining rods..in the trunk of my car along with a kvd tackle bag filled with soft plastics about 200 hundred bags and 6 planos filled.. i used this if i go to a big lake where i can pull my car down by the lake and fish.i use my car like my boat and if im gong pond fishing. i have 2 planos for spinners cranks and rat L traps then i have another for top water and with a few frogs. and one slim plano its old but does the job for my jigs/ chatter bait. then ill grab about 5 or 6 bags of plastics. 2 rods and im set.. all together my bag wieght is about 5 pounds

and of course i have rod socks.

Temperature extremes can cause soft plastics to take a set and hard baits to split on mold seams. The big issue is both mono and FC line degrades quickly in temps above 105 degrees, that sounds hot but in a closed space in the sun the temps can get over 140 degrees on a hot summer day.

I would also be concerned with extended hours road vibration has on rods and reels, you need to cushion them.

The tournament pros must keep gear in both their boats and vehicles, at the end of the season they remove everything and store the stuff in a safe place.

I dont care how convenient it is to keep all my rods/reels/tackle in my vehicle. Ive paid lots of money for my equipment and it all comes in the garage or man cave with me after locking the boat up.

I leave rods in the car every once in a while if I know I'm going out the next day or so and I'm feeling lazy. I usually take them out though, don't want to chance anything happening regardless of it being likely or not. I ALWAYS take lures out. I also get worried about people breaking in and stealing my gear. Then I've also got a broken window to worry about..

I don't keep any gear in my truck or boat. Theft, and moisture are the biggest worries for my gear.

Thanks for all the replys everyone. Didn't think about the effect bouncing around in the trunk would have on my reels and I am on the road quite a bit. Im thinking I might be better off just taking them into the house unless Im going out the very next day or something like that.

Yes, but not in the trunk.

I keep two spinning and one baitcaster in the passenger compartment along with a tackle box, sunglasses, hat and sun screen.

I carry my fishing license with me.

So far no problems.

i keep my gear in my car 24/7 even during the summer heat and have never seen anything melt or any difference in my hard baits

I keep 2 baitcasting rigs and a small, double-sided Plano tackle box in the cab of my truck most of the time. I put a sun shade behind the windshield and leave a window open about 1/2". I've never had any problems.

I have a one of the Chevy S-10 Blazers and during the summer I usually leave 2-3 combos in the truck with the rear seat down and the rods laying extended from the back to the front along the passenger side of the truck. I also have a rod rack that extends across the top of the vehicle that I'll put the rods into at times or when someone else is riding in the truck with me. I usually stop on the way home from work at a lake or two and it's very convenient. I also keep a small bag with 4 storage boxes as well and I'm only had an issue with some Z man products melting from the heat here in IL over the hot plus 100 days we had over the summer.

I heep all my gear in my MIni-van all season. Have not noticed line deterioration but sometimes my softs might take a set. I store my plastic in planos and try to keep them on a horizantal plane. this takes care of the setting problem but sometimes i forget. Warm them up again and you can usually get rid of it.

i do but don't worry about the elements as much as theft b/c i live in the city. i have a cardboard tube thru trunk into cabin to slide all my rods into. people have no clue there are rods in my car. that being said...they don't spend too much time in my car. i bring them in to check them over, tie up leaders, tie on lures etc the night before an outing. it allows me to add 30 min more fishing time

My baitcasting rigs are 1-piece and usually stay in the garage until needed.

When I am finished fishing all of my gear comes in the house. The last thing that I want is to get into an accident and have my tackle scattered all over the street.
