Kevinator1 Posted October 19, 2012 Posted October 19, 2012 What is your preference for a spinnerbait. Hootie I usually stick to my 6.4:1 which will allow me to burn it pretty good or I can always just slow it down a little. I like to slow it down around cover and then stop it and let the blades flutter. I don't think you can go wrong with the 6.4:1 on spinnerbaits Quote
jj'sbassinforfun Posted October 19, 2012 Posted October 19, 2012 6 to 1 unless its a deep slow roll. I drop down to 5 to 1. I often burn em in the springtime with 7 to 1 Quote
Super User LgMouthGambler Posted October 19, 2012 Super User Posted October 19, 2012 Agreed with all above for a 6 ratio. I use my Citica E for spinners. Can burn or slow down with that ratio. Quote
Diggy Posted October 19, 2012 Posted October 19, 2012 dern thread made me go fishing..I hit a 3lb bass, .thanks 201e citica on a bps m crankin stick with 14lb suffix elite mono. The 1dollar walmart spinnerbait was putting in work. Quote
Delaware Valley Tackle Posted October 19, 2012 Posted October 19, 2012 It depends on the bait's details. A 1oz with colorado blades fished deep, probably a cranking reel in 5:1. The rest of the time I don't have much of a preference unless it's a buzzbait then I like a fater reel to get it up on plane quick. Quote
Super User retiredbosn Posted October 20, 2012 Super User Posted October 20, 2012 I'm in the minority, I use a Curado E5 almost exclusively, 20 ipt. I also use a crankbait rod, seems like I pull it away to often if I don't. If I'm fishing 3/8 or less then I'll go to 25 ipt. Quote

If I'm fishing 3/8 or less then I'll go to 25 ipt. I also prefer a lower ipt, anything above 25-26 is just a throb machine, unless burning low profile willow blades. 21-23 even better, something around 5.2-5.4 in a modern low profile reel. Quote
Super User Bankbeater Posted November 1, 2012 Super User Posted November 1, 2012 At least a 6 to 1. I like to slow roll spinnerbaits, but there are times when I need to burn them across the tops of weeds or get tangled. Quote
Super User ww2farmer Posted November 1, 2012 Super User Posted November 1, 2012 Most of my spinner bait fishing is done over top of grass, I use Curado 51E's, they are 6.4:1 I think. Just right for me, I can burn them or slow them down, and it's just second nature to reel faster or slower. I would rather middle it, than have to have a 5.1 reel I need to crank like a madman to keep them up, nor do I think I would like a 7:1, some of those big blades pull hard and I feel the 6.4:1 is just right for me. Super User Fishes in trees Posted November 1, 2012 Super User Posted November 1, 2012 I'm old school enough that I remember when a 5-1 retrieve ratio was marketed as a "high speed" retrieve. Anyway, that's what I'm using for spinnerbaits, cranks, most any reaction bait really. I don't feel hindered in any way when I throw a buzz bait with that ratio. Quote
