Line Is Breaking Need Some Imput.

I am having trouble with my line snapping when I wing crank baits out there. I can’t figure out why it is breaking. I don’t think it is breaking at the knot or the line because I can swing three four pound fish no problem. I use 10 pound vicious fluorocarbon with a Abu Garcia Veritas rod and a Quantum Titanium gsx 7.0:1 ratio reel. I am not to sure about the reel but I love the rod and line. Is it common for the line to snap from time to time when u huck crank baits out there? It has happened a couple times this year and I have no idea why.

Not normal. Use a dry q tip and see if there are any nicks in the guides by swipping the guides. Also, check that its not the knot by somehow marking the line just before the knot. Also, ckeck the line for abrasions regularly by running it between your fingers and feeling for abrasion.

Thanks for the help. I check for abrasions and I don’t think that’s it. If the guides aren’t bad then the only thing I can think of is it might be the line before the knot. Would this be because the line is fraying when I am tying the knot?

I've had this happen to me in the past when I am really "whipping" a hard bait. Chances are, you are exceeding the breaking strength of the line right after the rod loads up.

Backlashes putting kinks in your line might be a cause???

Are you wetting your knots really well when cinching down? Also if you back lash bad with FC.....you need to inspect your line. A bad kink or over run into itself will snap you off. Use KVD Line Conditioner often if you're not already.

I know you said you don't think its the knot, but what kind of knot are you tying? Also, just to beat a dead horse, check for kinks. I check and retie my FC lines more often than any of my other lines.

I use the Palomar knot. What other line should I try? I think I have only used Berkley trilene and vicious.

I prefer P-Line Fluroclear green tint 10 lb for my crank baits. It's reasonably priced has a low memory and you have the advantages of a flurocarbon type line.

youre going to get this suggestion a good bit from a few people so i'll be the first to put it out there. check out yozuri hybrid 12lb. i have been using 10 lb on my baitcasters but will probably switch to twelve next year for them. i have the 6 lb on my spinning gear and it is really great stuff. the knots are awesome and the break strength to line diameter ratio is pretty good as well.

palomar is only good for braid IMO. Try a better knot. Or go buy some YoZuri.

Spinning tackle: #6 Hybrid (11.9 lb breaking strength)

Most people like the line, but some don't. It's inexpensive, so give

it a shot and see what you think. Also, I HIGHLY recommend applying

KVD Line & Lure Conditioner when you spool the line.

You've gotten some good advice so far...I think your issue is a combination of the rod (Veritas) having a very fast tip and using a thin, flourocarbon line (of questionable quality). If you are "winging" cranks repeatedly with that set up, that line is being strained at the rod tip. Flouro does not recover from strain like conventional mono does and repeated casts will create a situation where the line is being continually compromised (strain is additive) and will eventually break. You don't need to do all four, but you should do at least one of the following...

1.) More limber rod

2.) Thicker (and hopefully better) flouro

3.) Change to straight mono or hybrid line

4.) Retie often! cutting off last 3-4 feet.

I will defiantly consider different line, re tying more often and line conditioner I am sold on the rood though because I got the rod specifically for crank baits. I love the rood because I can feel everything from the crank bait moving back and forth to it bouncing off of things and when you get that little strike. I think it could be because I don’t re tie if I don’t get a fish for a while. I didn’t really think much of winging it out there repeatedly would wear the line down, it definitely make sense though. x2, you're in for a bad time if you tie a palomar knot with fc. Some say they have no problems, but I'm not sure how. It was break off city for me. Use a San Diego Jam knot for fc. I started using a modified version (I saw it mentioned it on another thread) where you skip the bottom loop and go straight back to the top. I've been using Vicious lately on one of my spinning set ups, just because I wanted to try it out. Since using this knot and retying often, I've had no issues. Still...can't go wrong with YoZuri. All but 2 of my baitcasters are spooled with 12# and I'm about to spool another spinning rod with some UltraSoft when it needs more line.
