RyneB Posted October 18, 2012 Posted October 18, 2012 As the title says, who out there is getting excited for ice season? Having only gotten out once last year due to unsafe ice, im hoping this winter i can get out a couple dozen times. Went and got my Frabil out of storage this afternoon, checking all my propane tanks and jigs. I know its kind of premature, but sitting in my Frabil is just as fun as casting off my Ranger. I can also do a lot more 12 oz curls in my hut over my ranger. Quote
Super User Darren. Posted October 18, 2012 Super User Posted October 18, 2012 Down here Ice is in the freezer, not on the water. Well mostly. I just never could do ice fishing when I lived in the Rochester, NY area. More of a warm weather guy. Good luck, though! Quote
Super User Marty Posted October 18, 2012 Super User Posted October 18, 2012 Never ice fished, never will. I'm too much of a wimp. Quote
Super User flyfisher Posted October 18, 2012 Super User Posted October 18, 2012 it is something i always wanted to try but never had the opportunity........some day maybe i will do it but it will have to be a pretty good road trip since here in VA there really isn't any ice to speak of. Quote
Super User clayton86 Posted October 19, 2012 Super User Posted October 19, 2012 I am I hope theres ice when I get back IDK how well I will fare going from here where its still breaking the 100* mark and will still be in the 90s when I go back to WNY to freeze my arse off. Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted October 22, 2012 Global Moderator Posted October 22, 2012 Nope, hate the cold. I'll be fishing soft water at the power plants all winter. Walking on the ice, no matter how thick, is something I just can't ever get comfortable with. Quote

RyneB Posted October 22, 2012 Author Posted October 22, 2012 i ice fish in a t shirt. I have a 1 man flip over shanty and a mr buddy heater. Im as warm as i would be at home on the couch. Walking on ice is still somewhat scary to me. I have been on some very very scary ice before, it is not fun. When it gets over 8 inches thick though, i feel more than safe. When the ice starts to melt, the bank melts first. I have seen guys take a small boat, or put a ladder on shore and the other end on the ice to get out on the safe ice. Im not that hardcore. Quote

Super User Ratherbfishing Posted October 26, 2012 Super User Posted October 26, 2012 I'm ready for the ice. Question is, is the ice going to be ready for me? Last year I wasn't able to get out even once! Rats!!!!!! That made winter (albeit a warm one) that much longer. Quote
Super User clayton86 Posted October 26, 2012 Super User Posted October 26, 2012 I think were in for a rough winter as in very cold. Which though I'm liking this warm weather and not a big fan of the cold. Cold weather brings 2 things I do love though great predator hunting and ice fishing so I welcome it. From reports im getting from guys back home all the deer and bear killed have been loaded with fat more then usual and the coyotes same thing all ready thick coats with some fat stores fox just opened yesterday so I don't know how there coats are but so far all the animals are pointing to it being a cold winter. I don't mind the cold so much, but hearing ice crack under my feet kinda unnerves me. Tom Quote
Super User ww2farmer Posted October 31, 2012 Super User Posted October 31, 2012 I am, it's a great change of pace to bass fishing. With last years mild winter it seems like I have not been on the ice in two years. I think we only had a month of safe ice on my home lake, and I only made it out 8-10 times. It's nice to drag the frabil flip over out to a spot, drill one hole, catch a bunch of bluegills on one bait, take what I want home (usually 10-12 decent ones) toss the rest back. No competeing, no running and gunning, no racking your brain trting to figure out what they want today. But I am also glad when it's over too, and I can get back to bass fishing. Quote
Super User clayton86 Posted October 31, 2012 Super User Posted October 31, 2012 I cant wait to get out there to your lake farmer gonna I got some buddy's out that way that coyote hunt a lot to gonna try and hit up the lake and call some coyotes all one trip. Quote
Jig Meister Posted November 19, 2012 Posted November 19, 2012 I used to do a lot of ice fishing as a kid, but now I just do not have the time, or the auger, or the poles ;/ But something about frying up some gills in the winter I really miss. Quote

If you go with me, I'll let you sit in the frabil flip over with the heater, I'll sit out side on a bucket........I have alot of "natural" insulation. 1 Quote

Hows the weather been back home gonna have early ice? Quote
SmokeRise1 Posted November 27, 2012 Posted November 27, 2012 I am. I went a little overboard last year and purchased all new jigging rods, tip-ups, a sled, 2000 gram boots etc. and couldn't get anywhere near my local lake. I had to drive to Vermont for a weekend just to try it all out. All I've heard this fall is how cold and how much snow we're going to get this winter and I can't wait. It's hard to explain to you guys down south, but there is something special about walking out on a lake, crunching through the snow to get to your spot setup and having coffee while the sun comes up. We go out in a big group and setup a grill and chairs and have breakfast, lunch and sometimes dinner out on the ice. The kids love it too and they are not confined to a boat all day. Plenty of space for them to run around. Quote
