How many scramblers have won super bowls? Steve Young, any others? Kickers may score, but how many in the hall? Stenerud, any others?

John Elway wasn't Michael Vick but was pretty light on his toes. Aaron Rogers is mobile, a lot of the time he doesn't have to, but he can flat out move. And I'm not sure if you classify Big Ben

I don't think it's fair to not classify those three as scramblers just because they did so well at moving in the pocket and then getting the ball out of their hands.

I wonder what their scoring would be if you didn't have an offense to move the ball in range or removed extra points from their totals

That's a fair question - but I'm betting that you did understand that I was making a reference regarding their  inherent value to the Team and the eventual out come of the game.

As the Playoffs roll around, we are reminded that every NFL season is a war of attrition and it takes an entire roster to win a championship.

A scrambler is one that spends more time out of the pocket than in the pocket, or so it's been said, if that were the case then every team out there has had at least one scrambling QB that resulted from a weak front line or from facing a strong defense.

Personally, I think it's someone who simply adds an extra demention to it's offense, an extra option that can run a couple hundred yards as well as throw for a thousand.

Why is it that this extra special player has not been more successful? is it the quick release thats better than a mobile QB? is it that they just can't be as accurate off the hip a lot of times? lots of reasons I guess, just seems difficult to grasp that it has not been more successful looking at the QB's that were famous for their ability to do both.

It has been asked if Griffin was afraid that Cousins might pose a threat.  Here's something to think about.

Drew Bledsoe was the superstar quarterback of the Patriots, having a great 1998 season, 'til he went down with an injury.  And with that one stroke of luck, good for Brady, bad for Bledsoe, the door was opened for Brady.  Initially the Pats fans were dismayed, in a state of depression.  They were well on their way to winning their division and then on to the playoffs, with Bledsoe at the helm.  He was one of the top quarterbacks in the league, 'til Brady had to step in.

Brady took over, and they got to the Super Bowl when Bledsoe was cleared to play.  But the Pats started Brady.  Bledsoe turned into a so so quarterback, or maybe even less.  It was all downhill after that.  That injury was effectively the end of Bledsoe's career.  It gave his understudy a chance to show his wares, and Bledsoe was suddenly expendable..

One can only wonder where Brady would be today but for Bledsoe's injury giving him the opportunity to step up.

Lots of stories like this out there and nice post by the way Rhino !!!

Joe Montana is one of those too, one of the greatest QB's to play the game IMO, could not land a starting job for any big name team and finished his career as a Chief.

All great points.  This might be the best i.e. most peaceful thread when it comes to sports i have ever been involved with :)

I think the main reason a scrambling quarterback has not been successful is due to a few reasons

Generally they are not as accurate passing

Running will rarely get you as many yards as passing

Being fast for a QB doesn't necessarily make you fast overall (Vick and griffin excluded) it more levels the playing field to the rest of the players on defense.

Everyone in the NFL is a stud and was most likely one of the best players on their college team so the gap of player talent is much less....high school all stars all go to college & College all stars go to the NFL

So now here are my official  straight up picks:

Patriots (even though i want the Texans to win)

Green Bay

Seahawks

Denver

For my picks against the spread:

Ravens with the points 10 point dog

Green Bay to cover the 2 1/2

Texans with the points 9 1/2 point dog

Seattle with the points 1 point dog

Should be another good week of football but hopefully I am out fishing instead of watching since the weather is supposed to be real nice here in VA this weekend :)

I think you may be right about the thread for sure, I have enjoyed it for the most part lol !! if I just could have got that dang spreadsheet to work.

It's been a lot of fun seeing all the different teams represented and showing the love for their favorite team as well.

Looks like we are on the same page with the picks this weekend.

Brady should have another big day with the Texan's in town, I think the Pats in the playoffs at home are just too much for Matt and the crew to handle, should be an easy game for them.

Green bay is healthy but on the road at candlestick, Gore I think will be their biggest problem, but A healthy Pack will be hard to beat anywhere.

Denver at home in the playoffs with Manning at the helm will be too tuff for the Ravens, Mannings experience with games like these should continue their quest for the ring, I think this will be the game to watch.

Seattle at the Falcons this is a tough call, if the falcons learned anything from the Skins game they could be tough at home, which I expect to see anyway, this game for the Seahawks will be close I feel, but the passion they showed on the road last week tells me they are in it to win it !!  Coach Pete is not unfamilure to playoff teams and knows how to win on the road, Sehawks win again as long as they keep 88 in check.

X2 - and as a Pats fan I was one happy camper they made the switch.

Just couldn't take any more plays where Drew would stand in the pocket, pat the ball for 7 seconds and then get clobbered.

This years 49ers are enduring a similar situation at QB.

Alex Smith was hurt and replaced by Colin Kaepernick.  Smith, although now healthy, has been riding the bench ever since.   Now if old Colin continues to run the ball, Mr Smith may get back in there as the hammer will fall on Kaepernicks head eventually.

If you remember, Bledsoe was holding onto the ball too long and throwing pics at the wrong times, Bledsoe was not the game manager that Bellichick wanted as his QB. I think Bellichick was gonna make the move to Brady regardless, the injury gave him the opportunity to do so. I think when it's all said and done, Bellichick will make that admission.

That move alone was what put Bellichick in the place he is in now LOL !!

J/K but you have to admit his eye for tallent is quite acceptional, I have to admire him for the strict flat out disapline he expects from each and every one of his players, it shows up every Sunday, it's non stop drilling and wide open throttle all day every day, as for the team it's every play, every player.

It's hard to beat that, those that do deserve it.

On a different note, i just saw where the jacksonviille Jags just fired Mike Murlarkey after one season. Im not saying that Blain Gabbert is good or great QB, but it seems that his potential is going down the toilet. He is gonna have his thrid head coach and thrid offensive coordinator in three seasons...same thing happened to Alex Smith. I hate it for the yyoung man, he is struggling as it is before these constant changes.

Thank God Murlarkey is gone. Gabbert is done. We all want Teabow Time here in the River City. Or atleast someone who is compitent on offense. Talking about Alex Smith or Matt Flynn and trying to build in the draft. Run those schmucks out there a couple seasons and draft a qb a year until the jags hit the gold in the 6th rnd with another Tom Brady LMAO. These folks that have been life long jags fans sure are hopeful

I like how Bellichick runs that team. even with Moss seemed like it was a machine 99% of the time.

Tebow TIme does not equal competent on offense....Butts in the seats, maybe but instant offense, not a chance.

Well that right there is their new owner Shad Kahn's main goal I think even though he is "all in" and moustache maina is rocking the area LOL He looks like the Natty Bo guy met Super Mario. Seems like a nice dude though, came from nothing started selling car bumpers now owns the Jags and a rediculous yatcht.

I am just reading the sports column and getting my inside info from some guys here at the office. Of course they are hardcore, some of them grew up with the jags so they know the ins and outs.

This is also brought on because Tim is a local guy and this is Gator country so Myer saying he(Teabow) can win builds up an even greater hype.

Make tebow a running back, fullback, or a tightend. I have pulled for the guy and i think he is a standup guy, but sadly he is not a nfl caliber quarterback. It would be really cool if he would go to jacksonville as a RB/FB.

Brady replaced Bledsoe during the second game of the 2001 regular season when Mo Lewis hit him and knocked him out of the game.

2001 Pats MVP = Mo Lewis

It's impossible to tell if Belichik would have made the move, but the injury certainly opened the door for Brady and he took full advantage.

I'm sure you guys remember the Brady/Bledsoe controversy that went on all season long around here that year.   People were still disagreeing about who should have started in the SB because of Brady's injury that caused him to miss the second half of the AFC championship game against Pittsburgh

Shhhhh that is crazy talk around here. I said something like that because when Denver intially picked him many of the sports guru's thought they would convert him to a TE. Boy I got some looks and even more excuses. Oh he throws a good deep ball, or the system is against him, the recievers suck. hahaha. It will be interesting now that the Jags have a GM, which is why Murlarkey lasted so long they wanted the new guy to clean house.

Tebow took the Broncos to the playoffs last year and won the first game. He was the most exciting player in the NFL

that year. Don't write him off quite yet. He was not really given much of a chance to play this year even though the Jets

were pitifull. There aren't a dozen "NFL caliber" quaterbacks in the league. I think Tim Tebow is better than most of the

remaining twenty.

Whats all this talk about Tebow not being a QB?

How many chance's has he really had to prove he can be a leader? Really???

How many of us can sit here and say that he had the best O line in the league? I mean we are talking about the Jets for goodness sake, what offense??

How many coaches has he had to help him be a valuable QB?

I honestly don't think he has been given a fair shot just yet, he had it pretty good as a Gator IMO, I think if he can get to where he can get a team that is on a good blocking sceme he may be able to accomplish something.

What that may be I don't really know, but I would look a little harder at him.

I'm a firm believer in having your be eleven "football players" on the field. If he goes to a tea, with any kind of quarterback, Tim Teboanother sites still one of the best eleven. I'd say he is a very talent athlete and a great football mind. His passing concerns me. I'd want him on the field in some capacity if he was on my team.

  • Super User
Posted

I never really watched him play. The guys here say he throws a good deep ball but short passing accuracy wains. But If Teabow comes to the Jags, I hope they atleast give him the shot they gave Gabbert, Gabbert had 2 seasons. 2 or 3 years as the QB not having to look over his shoulder or running gimmicks as his only chance, and a couple years of drafting and free agency to build around him, then people can say he is or isn't good. Urban Myer thinks he will excel at an offense in the NFL that runs a spread scheme. I dunno, Jags don't run that. Only thing I know he needs to get the hell outta new york.
