Spooled!!!!

Today I was fishing the river (Mohawk) and just snagged a tube and tied on a drop shot. I threw it out and 10 seconds later a boater that spots crew teams flew by picked up my line and spooled my reel in 10 seconds. I was then left standing there thinking I don't understand just happened. Anyone has any similar experiences?

Thankfully, no. But when I read your title I was hoping for a monster fish spooling you, not a boat.

However, if you want to report the sculling team crew boat to your state's game and fisheries department they may want to know as I would venture what they did was illegal unless it was accidental and your line got caught in their prop.

In addition, I would file a formal complaint with the school if known.

We have no idea where you are as you have not included your location in your avatar however I would think it would be in the northeast where sculling is a big sport.

Happened to a buddy of mine at a local lake that is notorious for clueless pleasure boaters. He was trolling and another boater cut about ten feet behind him at full speed catching both of his lines and spooling them in just a few seconds. Luckily the ranger saw what happened, chased the guy down, wrote him a ticket and threatened him with a laundry list of other charges if he didn't pay my friend for his lost line and lures right there on the spot.

Guy got a quick education on how expensive lead core line and lucky craft lures are. My buddy whipped out his phone, went to BPS website and showed him the prices right there. Two spools of line and two LC pointers cost the guy $100.

Been spooled by boats quite a few times, common here. Usually happens predawn on the outgoing tide when we are floating out lures and jigs for snook and tarpon. Boaters pay little attention and cut in front of the jetties. More fun being spooled by a fish.

I have been spooled by a fish before. It seems like on a boat the line would wrap around the prop.

That's what it does, and it can make a huge mess on the spindle, and disable the boat as well.

yes, i have, i was fishing for musky with suckers from shore and my pole flew into the water and at first i thought it was a fish but then i realized my rod was following the boat so i yelled and he heard me came back and after a few minutes of pulling up line i got my rod back ......with about 10 yards of line left.....

Been spooled by ducks a few times in flight. I've learned to drop my rod tip the the ground asap.

I've landed a couple of Canadian geese that swam through my line but never had one take off on me. I can tell you that trying to untangle a ticked off goose isn't easy or fun.

Crew boats and the minions that follow them shouting instructions thru a bullhorn at crack thirty on a beautyful summer morning................. please do not get me started. I love it when they row right between you and the bank and the jugheads in the clever little chase boat follow closely behind. The part I like the best is when they look at you like you are in their way........ Most of the college teams that use the res to practice and compete are very aware of the fishermen and do their best to go around. The highschoolers on the otherhand are truly irritating and condesending. Usually some little kid, barely able to control the small outboard and yell instructions at the same time. Especially dangerous on foggy mornings! Sam has the right idea. Find out who is responsible and let them know when the incident occured.

This is true I have had the pleasure of landing, sedating, and un-hooking a goose in sight of the DNR office....... Actually pulled the bird out of the air after it took off, but that was with a Froggin' rig....
