Spinning Reel - Best Line

What do you guys think is the best line to use with a spinning reel?

We need more information.

1. Tell us about the lures you are throwing.

2. Tell us about the body of water you are fishing.

For treble hook baits like small crankbaits and Shad Raps I use 8 pound mono.

For single hook plastics I use 8 pound flourocarbon.

For drop shots I have been known to drop down to 6 pound flourocarbon.

For heavy structure like trees and brush piles I go to 10 pound flourocarbon.

Nothing over 10 pound test on a spinning rig.

Here are some tips for a spinning rig from the pros at the Bassmaster University you may want to consider:

1. Run line through Kevin VanDam's Lure and Line Conditioner when spooling line.

2. If you are using the Berkley Spooling Station have the line come off the bottom of the spool to the reel.

3. Always throw your bail with your had. Never use the reel's handle to throw the bail.

4. If you have line twist loosen the drag WITH THE BAIL CLOSED and pull the line off the spinning reel. NEVER, NEVER, NEVER try to pull the line off the spinning rig with a tight drag.

5. Loosen spinning reel's drag when storing your reel.

As for a "brand" of line, it is totally personal preferance. I use Trileen and Bass Pro Shop line for fun fishing and Seaguar and 100% flourocarbon Trileen for tournaments.

By the way, I forgot to tell you to match your spinning reel's specifications with those stamped on your spinning rod.

Be sure to stay within the paramaters of your spinning reel, bait weight and line test and you will be able to cast a mile without any problems.

Braid...

X2, and use a leader, then you'll have best of both worlds. Braid is FAR easier to manage on spinning gear.

I actually use Sunline 12# mono on my Stradics. I very seldom have a line memory problem, even when fishing weightless senkos, which can really induce some line twist.

An opinion of course..........Braid ! Any technique can be used, any kind of fish can be caught, more line capacity, incredible strength given the thin diameter, minimal line twist, inexpensive in the long run if used with a leader, no need for a line conditioner (warm water works just as well on mono anyway). The only real negative to braid is getting tangled with another fisherman's line..........fish alone lol. Many feel braid gets severed more easily over rocky terrain, it may but the same diameter in a mono will too, if not severed roughed up and weakened for sure.

Braid is going to be the best to help with line twist and knots. If you dont want to use a braided line, then you should look into the YoZuri Ultrasoft. I would stick to something that is smaller than a 10# dia. The good thing about the YoZuri is that it has a stronger break strength than its rated.

Sunline sniper or invisix for manageable and easy casting floro lines. I would say 8lb would cover most applications. For something cheaper it is hard to beat Trilene XL.

After being on this site for several years and have read 1000's of posts, it appears to me that most fisherman here relegate spinning gear more for open water type fishing. IMO line management is the paramount concern and not breaking strength, especially for those that set the drag with a scale relative to the pound test they are using. With the drag set properly I'd have no qualms in landing a 6# fish, if I had enough line capacity I could land a 30 pounder, others have posted pics doing that already. To me the brand itself isn't all that important, I've had equal success form the bottom of the line to the top of the line.

The most hardcore, tournament driven, top shelf gear Bass fisherman on this forum, I am equal to in the saltwater realm minus I don't own a saltwater boat lol

So on that note I have used every mono and braid in salt. In freshwater a lot of the monos don't translate well and your cast will be like slinkys. I myself have found Spider Ultimate Mono, their average middle of the road line to be my all time favorite.

Positives:

- After the first 2-3 casts line memory is non existent.

- Casts farther than any line I've tried with my go to lures and worms.

- almost zero stretch, you would think they used their braid technology when they developed this line.

- lower diameter than regular mono

- great knot strength for any knot you throw at it

Negatives:

- lack of colors available

- price, if you change frequently like me

- terrible length selection. 1 spool will fill a 2500 reel up no prob but you'll have a lot left but not enough to fill a second spool in 4-8# range. I hate joining 2 lines together so the extra line is usually a waste unless my 1000 size reels need line.

So there's some things to think about. Lol

I'm slowly switching all my spinning reels over to Nanofil ( with a leader ). Throws a mile, no twist issues and I haven't had a breakoff in two years of fishing it. I use both the 10 and 12 pound test.

@dam0007, glad you are pleased with your mono selection, I only fish braid in freshwater. The only time I use mono line, except for drift fishing, is when I'm throwing my barracuda tubes, they rotate a constant 360 degrees causing sever line twist. Braid is my true preference but braid does not troll out like mono does, I troll my mono out after each outing, once I've done that about 5 times I respool with fresh line. I've used Spiderwire xxx and it's ok, but I seem to always go back to trilene xl. I spool up about 170yds of 14#, so a 330 yd spool works out good for me.

I have used Yo-zuri, BPS mono, Big Game and Trilene XL. I like the Yo-zuri and Big Game the best.

Nanofil.. its like braid, but it casts better and takes even more twist. 12# with 8# flouro leader.

20lb power pro braid with 10lb yozuri leader or depending on application no leader.

Mono. It is the the cheapest and easiest to use. Like SirSnook said set your drag right and you can land anything within reason. I use 8# Stren Megathin and landed a few in the 4's, 5's and 6's. It will handle pretty heavy weeds no problem, I fish some fairly weedy ponds. just check your knot and line regularly. Most breakoffs are due to knicks in the line. Berkley is good but Stren is the best IMO.

I hear good stuff about the Yozuri and want to try it so I can't vouch for that.

Ive been using braid with flouro leaders.

Frog/swimbait rod has 30lb power pro super slick, 12lb flouroclear leader for swimbaits

Topwater/cranks rod has 15lb super slick, 8-10lb flouroclear leader for jerkbaits/cranks

dropshot/senko rod has 10lb power pro, 6lb flouroclear leader

8lb yo zuri ultra soft (use KVD)

or

20 lb power pro braid

depending on the application

both work really well for me
