bass1980 Posted October 10, 2012 Posted October 10, 2012 Hi there, New to the forum and new to bass fishing. Growing up I've been into modifying cars and then sports. That takes up all of my time but now the passion has changed. The new fishing hobby didn't get any cheaper though lol. I've fished here and there in the past and just gotten into bass fishing this year. All I can say is wow, can't believe how technical and how much knowledge is needed to be a great fishermen. I mean you can make it as simple as you wish or as complex as you want it to. I never knew most people have a rod/reel/line combo just for the specific style/jig and ending up with many. There's so many products and learning what is better is hard to know right now. I feel like looking into headers and intake for cars back in the day. Which one is better which one is makes more power haha, but in reality many of them are pretty much just personal preference and gimicks over the other as they all work just as good or they don't really work. My buddies ask me anything about modifying cars and sports and I can answer just about anything but now I'm the newbie with fishing questions. So for the past few months I've been studying bass fishing every single day. Jumping around from topic to topic with no game plan. Now I have a game plan and with winter coming up here in the north I will use the down time for training lol. I'll make a game plan of what to study on, slowly buy my rods/reels combo, and build up my tackle. Then in the spring put it to the test. What I'm trying to accomplish; Learn about proper rod/reel combo for wacky worm, how to fish the techni, que and buy setup Learn about proper rod/reel combo for spinner bait, how to fish the technique, and buy setup Learn about proper rod/reel combo for crankbait, how to fish the technique, and buy setup Learn about proper rod/reel combo for texas rig worm, how to fish the technique, and buy setup Learn about fish behavior during different season Learn about lake structures and where fish likes to be at Learn about weather condition and how it effects fish behavior Learn about what color to use for certain days and water Many many more but my head is about to explode already. Great forum, I've been lurking and reading a lot for a while now. Quote

Super User new2BC4bass Posted October 10, 2012 Super User Posted October 10, 2012 Welcome. I can tell you already know all about the Bait Monkey! I got back into fishing a few years ago and decided to go with baitcasting gear. Spent more money than I should have since then. More gear than I get to use, yet keep looking for more. Sometimes I think I am turning into a collector. (oh no!) My wife is going to Sounds like you a single young guy. Enjoy life while you can. LOL. Quote
plaza80 Posted October 10, 2012 Posted October 10, 2012 Funny how i was just reading about what the heck is the term Bait Monkey the other day. At this point I don't consider it bait monkey yet as I have some gears that is not suitable. I mean I was throwing some spinner bait with a over size crappie rod and didn't even realize what a mistake that was until I tried my buddies Abu. Soon enough I will start to buy things I don't need. Well actually I'm married. In a span of 3 yrs I've gotten married, bought a house, and now working on the junior. That's kind of the reason why I don't care for cars and sports anymore, change in lifestyle. However fishing, truck, bass boat is the new craze for me. Why can't I take up hobbies that doesn't cost much money. Quote
NBR Posted October 10, 2012 Posted October 10, 2012 I've been fishing for over 65 years and have read or heard or watched and tried most of the techniques. A few years ago I did a lure inventory and had over 5,000. Of course I've bought some since then and maybe lost a few but a computer crash lost my list and I'm not going to do that again. While the rules of bass fishing generally apply don't be shy about trying different things that seem opposite to what the books, TV programs, seminars and conventional wisdom would suggest. Years ago we were fishing a somewhat remote lake on the MN/ONT border. It was one of those days that varied from bright sunlight to cloudy & rainy as fast moving clouds passed overhead. Conventional wisdom says low light dark colored bright sun light colored. On this particular day it was just the opposite. Another time we were fishing a S.W. Michigan lake on a hot, dead still August mid day. We had been out for a while and activity had just stopped. We were off to fish some break lines when for some reason I stopped in a large shallow flat where I had never caught a thing except early morning, late evening or at night. The water in this area is no more than 2 feet deep. I had a buzz bait tied on and on the first cast had a fish. We fished there for 2 or 3 hours. Moral, don't be afraid to break step with conventional wisdom. When I'm having a slow day I wish I'd break my old habits more often. Quote

Shewillbemine Posted October 15, 2012 Posted October 15, 2012 Welcome! You said "headers and intakes" so you're speaking my old language too. Like any hobby worth having, bass fishing can be as cheap or expensive as you'd like it to be. Don't go overboard! Quote
Topwaterspook Posted October 15, 2012 Posted October 15, 2012 Welcome to BR. Lots of good information available here. Lots of good folks too. I truly hope you enjoy your new hobby. Quote
Goose21 Posted October 16, 2012 Posted October 16, 2012 As others have said welcome, and you are in the right place as there is a wealth of knowledge and experience on these forums. I played sports through college and have fulfilled "the rush" after college by competing with my own self to become a better angler and share my passion with others. Quote
