Super User scaleface Posted October 9, 2012 Super User Posted October 9, 2012 This is a silly question but would like the advice of some veteran bass anglers. Ive been an avid bass angler since the 70s, so I should know the answer but a person cant know it all. The last two years Ive been having good luck on a vintage Rogers Big Jim Crankbait. 1\4 ounce I think, the small one. It has hooked a lot of bass and two lunkers, the problem is the size 6 hooks tangle quite often. I dropped down to size 8 VMC's , but they look to small. Im afraid that I will lose a big fish if the #6's are knotted together , or not hook one because of the #8s are to small. A 6 and an 8 together also tangle. What would you choose , hooks that may entangle or hooks that are on the small side? Quote
Highhawk1948 Posted October 9, 2012 Posted October 9, 2012 I change all of my crankbaits to triple grip hook, usually size 4 and 6. Quote
Super User A-Jay Posted October 9, 2012 Super User Posted October 9, 2012 Welcome to BR ~ I've had very good luck with the Mustad KVD Elite Series Short Shank Triple Grip Hooks. Though I am not familiar with that particular crankbait, the short shank design of this treble might allow you to plus size your hook choice and alleviate the tangling problem at the same time. Super User A-Jay Posted October 9, 2012 Super User Posted October 9, 2012 I just looked up the Big Jim bait - looks allot like a wiggle wart. Those KVD trebles should be just what the doctor ordered. A-Jay Quote

AndyTN Posted October 9, 2012 Posted October 9, 2012 Mustad KVD Elite Short Shank They are a good investment. I have changed many of my lures over to these due to just the poor quality of some of the manufacturers. I have also just swapped out my buddies Zara Spook Jr. after he was experiencing poor hookups with the factory ones. He did not believe there could be that much of a difference. He's now a believer. Super User WRB Posted October 9, 2012 Super User Posted October 9, 2012 The VMC 1X round bend size 4 should work, this is the hook supplied on Lucky Craft RC 1.5. The round bends are shorter and help to prevent tangling, and wider gap to improve hooking the bass. Tom Quote
Super User scaleface Posted October 16, 2012 Author Super User Posted October 16, 2012 I opted to go to size 8 hooks. Yesterday I started out throwing a Bandit shallow running crank . Caught a fish in the first couple of cast then nothing for a long time. When I did catch another fish , it was hooked on the outside. Time to go to the old reliable rattleless Big Jim. Caught a fish on the first cast. He smashed it. Caught many ,many more then a big one hit it. I played it out and landed it. I was lucky .Even though the bait was well inside the mouth the tiny hooks did not have a good hold on it. Im going to have to buy some short shank hooks. I bought these lures at an antique store for .50 each. The hooks are going to cost four times what the lure did LOL. Thats cool, the bass here hammer them. Quote
Super User scaleface Posted October 30, 2012 Author Super User Posted October 30, 2012 Update. Replaced the hooks with the KVD short shanks. Zero tangles and good hookups. Thanks for the suggestions. 1 Quote
