I.rar Posted October 9, 2012 Posted October 9, 2012 im picking up a p95, my first handgun purchase, this thursday. i already have a box of WWB for the range but was wondering what everyones prefers for a home defense round. i was originally leaning towards the federal hydra shok but everywhere i read people say its old technology and there are better choices. a few that i keep seeing mentioned are the speer gold dots and hornadys offerings. i do know it depends on how it feeds on a particular gun, but i was looking for some suggestions to get me started. thanks. Super User MarkH024 Posted October 9, 2012 Super User Posted October 9, 2012 For home defense, find whatever round feeds the best and never jams your gun. That's the best round in my opinion. I think you should do a little experimenting at the range with a few brands. Maybe someone with the same firearm can help you narrow your selection down. At the end of the day, the guy facing your barrel doesn't know what is in it and 99.9 % of the time probably won't stick around to find out. Quote
nick76 Posted October 9, 2012 Posted October 9, 2012 Obviously this is a preference thing. I personally use the Federal LE Ammunition rounds. On a side note, my LE friend and I were having a discussion the other day about "cheap" ammo and he was dead set against it. I said it was better than having none and that even most "cheap" practice round ammo will place a hole in a target. It just may not be in the same exact location or at the same distance. Quote
Super User slonezp Posted October 10, 2012 Super User Posted October 10, 2012 Congrats on the P95. Was also my first handgun, my favorite one to shoot and it sits at my bedside. The gun has never jammed once and is relatively easy to disassemble and reassemble for cleaning. It's loaded with Hornady hollow points. I shoot Federal at the range because I got a helluva deal. Quote
Super User MarkH024 Posted October 10, 2012 Super User Posted October 10, 2012 Slone are you shooting at the new place in Lombard? If so, how is it? Quote

Nice. i think i remember you posting in the thread i made a while back. ive shot a friends p95 and loved it, especially for the price. kinda OT, but what do you use to clean the barrel? i have hoppes 9 and oil and some CLP. on a rimfire forum im on, alot of people like the otis kits and boresnakes but ive seen people mention using weed wacker string, melting one end and threading a patch so it catches on the melted end. not the best description, but ill try to find a picture of it. ive never used it as i have both the otis kit and boresnakes for my .22 lr, but it seems to be a very cheap alternative. Super User Hi Salenity Posted October 12, 2012 Super User Posted October 12, 2012 I'm using 147gr Hydra-Shok in my 9mm & handloads in my 45s Quote
I.rar Posted October 19, 2012 Author Posted October 19, 2012 i did pick up a 25rd box of remington ultimate home defense while i was at bass pro. it was the only non FMJ ammo they had in 9mm. Quote
Super User SPEEDBEAD. Posted October 19, 2012 Super User Posted October 19, 2012 Slone are you shooting at the new place in Lombard? If so, how is it? Those are actually really good bullets. If I dont have the regular Hornady's at the store, I'll recommend people buy these (same price) but throw away the gimmicky box (unless that's your kind of thing). They'll do the job, absolutely. Stasher1 Posted October 23, 2012 Posted October 23, 2012 I chose the 135gr +P Hornady Critical Duty over the Critical Defense, based on reports of poor penetration and and jacket seperation with the 9mm Crit. Defense. Quote
backcast88 Posted November 7, 2012 Posted November 7, 2012 There are a lot of good options for SD/HD rounds. Hornady TAP/Critical Defense/Critical Duty, Remington Golden Saber, and Winchester PDX1. I personally use Speer Gold Dot and Federal HST. Both can be found online in 50 round boxes for the same price or maybe a couple dollars more then other rounds in 20-25 round boxes. Quote
BassResource.com Advertiser FD. Posted November 12, 2012 BassResource.com Advertiser Posted November 12, 2012 Excellent choice with the P95. My first 9mm was a P85 back in 1992. I shot bowling pin matches with it and never had a problem. The P95 is supposed to be even better. Good luck with it. As far as defense rounds, I would use a quality hollow point. Which ever brand your gun feeds the best. Quote
I.rar Posted November 13, 2012 Author Posted November 13, 2012 thanks for all the replies guys. so far i have around 130 rounds (both FMJ and hollow points) through it and only a couple FTFeed which happened with the first couple magazines and i figure was me limp wristing. since then its been 100%. at the moment i have a mag full of 147gr hydra shock. ive been meaning to pick up some of the hornady critical rounds but everywhere seems to sell out before i get there. JigMe Posted November 15, 2012 Posted November 15, 2012 9mm is a find round, but if you really want to put someone down, Then consider a shotgun with double oo buck shot, but hopefully you dont ever need to use it. Quote
SeaBeaver Posted January 12, 2013 Posted January 12, 2013 I like the Magsafe line of prefrag ammo. Just make sure your gun likes it and if you get the +p versions that your gun can handle the extra powder. The results with this ammo is very impessive on tissue and they break up in sheetrock so a missed shot (not that any of us would miss) would be less likely to stray as far lethaly. Quote
Super User Raider Nation Fisher Posted January 14, 2013 Super User Posted January 14, 2013 Glaser rounds. If you can find them. They can be pricey. However, they destroy everything human that they contact. Quote
