As some of you might know, there is a new bait out by a company that makes a top water "frog" bait that is in the shape of a bird- ironically the company is called Flipin' the Bird. Anyways, I just started using it this fall, in the shallows and it is amazing how many bass go after a bird in the water. The bird, like most top water frogs, has a hollow body with a double-prong hook. Unlike the frog that has one single strand to produce "legs" in the rear of the bait, the bird has nine seperate strands that are tied off at the end (on the inside) of the bird. The 8 silicone strands (4 on each side) of the bird fold out and protrude down into the water like its wings and feathers. Then, on the rear of the bait, there is another silicone strand(bundle) the simulates its tail. I usually throw the bird into thick cover on the banks to simulate a bird that had the misfortune of falling into the water. You can fish it the same as a frog, but before you fish it back, give it a few twiches on the surface where you threw it, thats usually when I get my hits. I currently only own one color and that is the Red-Wing Black Bird being that it is common in my area, but they have about 4-5 colors on their site as well as tackle warehouse.

If there is anyone else who has used the bird, please post how you fish it, the color and area/cover you fished.

Any questions too, please ask and I will answer them as best as I can being that the bait surfaced on the fishing market about a month ago or two, I am still learning the bait as well.

Do you have a known weight of that lure? It looks excellent for what I do... Flipping hollow bodies into shallow cover! Have you had any luck using it as such? I assume it casts well? How does it hold up?

Sorry for all the questions. I may have to try one.

I bought the RWBB back in July but havent used it yet. The hooks on it are quite sharp better than my Kopper, Spro, Scum frogs. I have a few spots that those birds always dive at me in the spring time. They are in cattails and this will be my taget area for it. Im not sure about trying it right now cause the pike are out and dont think it will hold-up to them nor do I want to lose it.

I did weight it and it weighs .544ozs

Thats pretty cool. Theres tons of those birds all over my lake in the spring/summer months. Haven't seen any since it got colder out though. Think Im gonna have to try that next year when it gets warmer.

Probably looks quite a bit like a field mouse or other rodent that a bass might see in the water also, especially with the "wings" along the side. The material on the side would slick back when moved and then puff up at rest, a lot like the fur would on mouse in the water. It's a neat bait and I know bass eat birds, I've caught one that had caught a swallow that had perched on a brushpile limb sticking out of the water I'm guessing.

The guy who makes them is Sam Kennedy. Very nice guy and neat lures. I haven't used/bought one but it's the same concept as a hollow body frog. Frog/bird/mice...you can't go wrong with any of them. Glad you enjoyed Flipin The Bird. One day when my frog box dwindles down I'll pick one up, but I have about 50 frogs/rats right now, and I use maybe 3. :Idontknow:

I have gotten about 2 bass with it already, but being that it's colder and the birds are gone, I dont think they'll be as effective as they would in the spring or summertime now. And it does cast well, the weight of it is nice and you can easily wip it back into those cattails.

I'm glad a lot of you guys like this product! I havent used it a lot but come next spring I will, and I'll probably make another post about it too in the spring!!

I have the same exact one as shown above and the dark green one with brown wings. I have had no luck yet with either. The weight is similar to the heaviest Kopper's frog. Keep you guys posted if catch anything on them.

The bird has been in production about a year, prototypes around about 2 years. There is a web site flipping the bird.com with a video.

I was looking at that lure last night.... wish they made a color a bit more like a baby duck, one is pretty close.

Yeh thats where I saw it... I might get 1 or 2, Im doing really well with spooks right now so maybe this topwater will succeed also.

Caught a 4 pounder this spring that spit up an 8 inch bird in the livewell. Scared the crap out of me just looking at the thing. Didn't weigh the fish afterwards, wanted it to still be over 4 pounds.

Persuader makes a hard top water baby mallard duck that works good, not weedless.
