Jig And Pig?

I here a lot about the "jig and pig" craze and i was just wondering if this is a general term for all jigs? What type of jig will catch me the pigs in the fall? Football, grass, or swim jig? What colors and what trailers? Thanks!

Jig and pig is an antiquated term that originally described a jig with a pork trailer, hence jig and pig. Now it is used to describe a jig with a soft plastic trailer generally, although "uncle Josh" still makes the pork trailers.

I don't know if it's really a "craze" they've been around for a long time and have always been pretty popular. They're just really effective at catching numbers of fish and they seem to catch bigger fish. Any of those jigs will catch big fish, it all depends on the situation and location you're fishing them.

The term "jig & pig" was coined by Outdoor Life magazine editor Bob Lincoln back in the early 50's, and made popular by B.A.S.S. Basmaster magazine in the 70's and early 80's the era when the jig & pig and Teaxs rigged plastic worms dominated tournaments. The traditional jig & pig was a combination Arkie style jig with vinyl skirts or deer hair and frog style pork rind trailer; Uncle Josh #11 black or brown being the most popular.

Colorful silicone skirts and soft plastic chunks, followed by creatures became popular in the 90's and hijacked the term pig & jig, no longer a pork trailer, the jig could have soft plastic or pork trailers. Pork rind trailers still work very well, but they are old school, ugly looking and messy to fish with compared to the life like looking colorful soft pastic trailers.

Weekend bass anglers tend to use what the pros use on TV and a tournament pro is fishing for 15 lb 5 bass limits and hopes to catch a kicker 6 lb bass to up the weight and win the tournament. Soft plastic perform well for the tournament pro. The old style "pig & jig" pork rind trailer still catches big bass for those who still use it.

Yes, any trailer on a jig is called a "pig."

How to catch the big ones this fall on a jig?

Ponds - Drag your jig (blue/black or PB&J) along like it is a crawfish. Close your eyes and think how a crawfish moves on the bottom and that is how you move your jig. Once you feel the tap or bump set the hook hard over your head.

Lakes - Same as ponds but look for rocks, stumps and other structure on the bottom. Be prepared to lose some jigs.

Rivers - Mimic a bluegill or a crawfish with the color. Throw it into any wood or along any pads and grass lines that are still green. Pitch and flip that jig everywhere until you lose it.

Craze? Jig n pig has been catching bass forever. Its hardly a craze. If you want to catch big bass go with a jig. Cant go wrong with tried and true black and blue. Try a small jig with a big trailer and vice versa. Any jig will catch you fish in the fall. Try to match colors with the local forage or like i said you can never go wrong with black and blue.
