As to deep jerkbaits here is another vote for the Lucky Craft Staysee 90

Me, too!

I like Staysees and Pointer DD, but honestly my experience has been there is a small window of opportunity with these baits.  Primarily prespawn before smallies move shallow.  I probably need to do some homework, and figure more out about when these work other times, but for now, their use is pretty limited.

I'm a jerkbait junkie, that is see jerkbait, eventually buy jerkbait. Here are some of my favorites....

Pointer 78-small profile for a tough bite

Pointer 100- the gold standard in my opinion, this one took jerkbaits to another level

Pointer 128- don't be afraid to throw these, I live in Michigan and they work up here too. This one does well in getting the big bite.

Lucky Craft SK Jerkbait- similar to an X rap, good over shallow weed flats

Lucky Craft Flash Minnow , long skinny bait, runs a little more shallow than a Pointer which can be a plus when the weeds are close to the waters surface.

Lucky Craft Silent Pointer- new bait to try this spring. Why did I buy it ? Its a different and it's a Lucky Craft.

Ima Flit-if you are already throwing Pointer's & X raps add this to your collection, this is the most overlooked one on the market in my opinion

Rapala X Rap- probably your best value, often works as good or better than high dollar japanese baits. It has a wild aggressive action which I like to work fast

Rapala Husky Jerk- I use one color that's very unique, their white glass minnow with the refelective inserts is a real fish catcher.

Megabass Trick Darter- started throwing these last year, all I can say is wow, very impressed. I need to fish it more but it just might be better than a Pointer 78 which is the size & depth that it compares to.

Jackall Squad Minnow 95- it stops right away on the pause, at times this can be a real good trigger especially in cooler water.

Yozuri Pin's Minnow - small profile, runs very shallow , inexpensive but at times very effective.

Jackall Squirrell- This one and the Lucky Craft Staysee are great choices when you want to fish a jekbait deeper. I usually prefer a pull & pause with this type of bait

OSP Rudra & Asura- new baits that I picked up this winter to try this spring, I've heard good things about them

Spro MCstick- I picked up a few last year, haven't fished them enough to form an opinion

Any time you would consider fishing a crankbait

at the comparable depth, the Staysee is an option,

year around.

To the Staysee guys... I too am a fan of the Staysee but have come to think of it more as a suspending crankbait than a jerkbait.  I have better luck fishing it near lake bottom with a pull/pause or slow constant retrieve than fishing it mid-column in an erratic jerk/pause retrieve.  How have you guys been successful fishing the Staysee?

I'm looking forward to trying the Pointer 95 silent this year.  It's supposed to run a little deeper than the rest of the Pointer family.

Nice write up, now what about deep jerkabaits?

Roadwarrior, that's pretty much my approach to it, but I simply don't get bit outside of that narrow time frame.  It's gotta be a local thing, because I'm not the only one up here that shares this experience.  And yet, there are a few guys that do well with them at other times.

I use the pointer 100DD's & the staysee SP V.3 and staysee 120 quite a bit especially April & May prespawn on lake  erie & again in Oct & Nov. When the water temps are in the 40's & 50's they really shine and the fish are carrying maximum weight.

Thanks Primus.

That's the window I was talking about.  Perhaps its a Great Lakes thing?

John I know. I was indirectly steering that towards you. On erie that's the nirvana of smallmouth bass fishing.

Do you guys find the X - Rap deep to have somewhat less darting action compared to the original X - Rap? Are the LC deep pointers the same way, seeming to have muted action compaired to the shallow version?

  • Super User

The deep pointers & x-raps have similar action to their

shallow counterparts. The action just takes place deeper. The lc pointers DD's do suspend with a very slow sink while the deep x-raps float.

Hmmm maybe I'm just fishing them wrong. Do you have to snap the rod down harder to get the same darting action or does the larger bill naturally mute the action a tad?

I fish them the same. Maybe your not over active fish.

Keep trying them they will produce!

Thanks Dwight. I've caught fish on them and will keep using them.
