pjmags Posted October 6, 2012 Posted October 6, 2012 Ive been fishing a small golf course pond a lot lately and I havent caught anything over a pound. I went yesterday and my friend caught a fish that was about 3 pounds. How do I avoid catching the dinks and focus on targeting the bigger fish? Like i said this pond is pretty small and shallow. Thanks! Quote
QUIENYO Posted October 6, 2012 Posted October 6, 2012 I've dabbled in the forbidden fruit of golf course ponds as well. Initially I was throwing live night crawlers and catching an endless supply of dinks. I started to throw jigs just to learn how to cast a baitcasting reel. Low and behold, I stared catching 3 and 4 pound bass out of a small golf course pond. Try stepping up to a different set up; jig or swim bait. You may not catch as many dinks, but I'd bet you will start catching bigger bass. Good luck. Quote
Jay Ell Gee Posted October 7, 2012 Posted October 7, 2012 I agree wholeheartedly with the jig and pig and swimbait recommendation. Keep in mind, however, that if the water is small enough, it may not support monstrous bass. Just something to keep in mind. Quote
fishking247 Posted October 7, 2012 Posted October 7, 2012 most golf course ponds are over populated and you will have to weed through the dinks to get a respectable fish. 1 Quote
Super User rockchalk06 Posted October 7, 2012 Super User Posted October 7, 2012 I'll take a dink over a skunk Quote
Super User Grizzn N Bassin Posted October 10, 2012 Super User Posted October 10, 2012 Just use baits that are slow moving like a big jig or chatterbaitsfind structure or cover like a stump or log there might be some dinks around it soo i normally just get up under the log real deep to try and by pass those small fish on the surronding area... that what i try to do Quote
Jake P Posted October 10, 2012 Posted October 10, 2012 Agree with just about everyone. I am very confident that jigs and 10 inch worms WILL catch you bigger fish. The age tail Thumper is my go to big worm. Use a small 1/8 weight and work it slow. Quote
Super User J Francho Posted October 10, 2012 Super User Posted October 10, 2012 You're in California. A swimbait should work. Quote
Jay Ell Gee Posted October 14, 2012 Posted October 14, 2012 Agreed! Start with a 9 inch MS Slammer in baby bass and then start tossing the 8 inch Hudd! If there is a big fish in there, you will know! Quote
vabass1 Posted October 14, 2012 Posted October 14, 2012 I also fish golf course ponds. I normally catch lots a dinks, and one day I went out using a larger jig than normal and hooked a 3-4 lber. If you are using the same bait every time you go to that pond, and catching dinks on it, I would recommend changing to something larger. Quote
