jignfule Posted October 6, 2012 Posted October 6, 2012 I've watched my share of MLB games in my 57 years, but that may stand as the worst call in history. I am neither a Brave or Cards fan this year. Short-stop had to take 16 strides to get to the ball in the outfield and the infield fly rule applies????? SHAME on the ump. A NFL replacements offical could have called it better. Quote
Super User flyfisher Posted October 6, 2012 Super User Posted October 6, 2012 yes it was a horrible call on many different levels. Quote
Sfritr Posted October 6, 2012 Posted October 6, 2012 Actually, as much as I hate St.Louis the ump got the call right. Although he made it WAAAYYYY late: Rule 2.00 (infield Fly) "On the infield fly rule the umpire is to rule whether the ball could ordinarily have been handled by an infielder - not by some arbitrary limitation such as the grass, or the base lines. The umpire must rule that the ball is an infield fly, even if handled by an outfielder, if, in the umpire's judgment, the ball could have been as easily handled by an infielder." Agreed: a split second before the ball hits the ground is a bit late. And, at least it was good to see Chipper end his career on a hit. Quote

I disagree that it ball could have been EASILY handled by an infielder and the LATE call makes it one of the worst calls ever. IMO Quote
The one that got away Posted October 6, 2012 Posted October 6, 2012 Bad call, but not as bad as the call in the Royals-Cards WS back in I think it was '85 Quote
Super User Marty Posted October 6, 2012 Super User Posted October 6, 2012 I don't know what the actual practice is with regard to invoking the Infield Fly Rule, but I think the call was right according to the letter of the law. To me the infielder seemed to be going to the ball at a very ordinary pace with no urgency such that he would've had to hustle just to get to the ball. It could be argued that the call was late and that it was too far into the outfield, but I can't see the possibility that the infielder exceeded ordinary effort. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N4Z5MIaISrU Quote
Quillback Posted October 7, 2012 Posted October 7, 2012 If the SS had caught the ball, then no one would give a hoot if the infield fly rule was called. The two errors Atlanta made in this game were what really sunk their ship. Quote
Big Al23 Posted October 8, 2012 Posted October 8, 2012 As the rule is stated, yes the infielder could have handled the ball BUT, I feel the ball was in the outfield, not the infield and the ump should not have called it. Quote
Bean Counter Posted October 8, 2012 Posted October 8, 2012 I am big Braves fan and was at the game. That was a horrible call, one of the worst of all time in my oppinion. However, if the Braves had not made three errors that let four runs score, it would not be an issue. I had my teenage daughter with me and was very embarrassed by the fan reaction. There is never a sufficient reason to throw debris onto the field. Quote
