so i am getting ready to order some tackle in a few days, i was thinking back to last year and what worked and what didn't . how can i forget. i lost MANY fish includeing a 8# + bass on a lake were if you talk of a 8#+ bass you better have the fish to back it up. it seems that when i set the hook that my line would break at the knot. i tie many diffrent knots, same result. i re-tie often i check for cuts and nicks all the time. the only thing i can come up with is the tru tungsten bullet weights, because i tie my dads hook and sinker on also and the only common diffrence is that he uses lead sinkers.he never had a break all year. has this happened to anyone else , and if so any suggestions. i love tungsten weights so i would like to keep useing them if there is a brand out there that will work. also the tru tungsten weight i have do not have inserts in them .

If it really is the Tungsten weights like you think are they really worth loosing fish? I mean you can like them all you want but if they ARE what is costing lost fish then really it's not worth it because you buy them in the first place to HELP you catch fish.

Also try a double palomer knot. Also make sure you moisten it down before you tighten it.

Yeah just switch to lead again and see if you still get broke off if so then you can know its not your tru tungsten if you don"t then just buy lead

(makes sense to me)

Thinking back to last year I NEVER had a fish break my line due to a tungsten weight.

I use tungsten weights for just about everything and on a variety of lines.

An improperly tied knot on the other hand...... ::)

I have been using tru-tungsten worm weights for as long as they have been out, not once did that I recall did hey ever cut the line. I have used them with braid, mono, and fluorocarbon, pegged an unpegged, 1/16 oz. -1.5 oz. I could see if you got maybe a sinker or two that slipped past QC. that had a nick in the metal........but to have this happen often is unlikely. You have other issues, bad knots, too light of line with too much rod, poor hook setting technique, or all of the above.

Before you get bent out of shape and respond " I have been fishing for years, and tie great knots, or do this perfect or that perfect."...........and on and on. Just look at ALL the factors, we have all been there at point or another, regardless of experience.  Just last year I broke off, or had come off a few good fish doing something I shouldn't have been, and yup my first response was to "curse" my equipment, but in all reality I shouldn't have been using a big powerful rod, with light line, a bait with stiff weed guard that need a hard hook set, and around heavy cover. We all make mistakes. Not trying to start anything. Just trying to give you an opinion from my way of thinking.

I don't think i've ever had a line break as a result of a weight...  and I use very cheap weights that I get from the local shop.  They're about 1.39 for 10 1/4 oz weights.  That being said, if I need to throw a 1/4 oz weight, i'm not using 6# line.

What kind of line do you use, what size weight, and what strength line?

not bent out of shape, i am happy to hear that maybe its my fault. i can correct it! everyone i fish with say's i set the hook really hard. i manly use 12# mono and floro. i even had some breaks with braid. been bass fishing for 25 years. tied 1000's of knots. i think tru tungsten is great not knocking them. just asking question here to get answers thats all.

the only thing it could be then is that i set the hook to hard or use to light of line but i have used 12# mono , floro. for years and years. i bass fish 200 days a year part of my job is fishing and i had never had this happen to me before. all i'm saying is that no other lure i use has this problem. and i also tie my fathers hooks on for him and he uses lead so with the process of elimination i came up with this theory. :)

Try backing off a little on your drag.  If you set the hook really hard, and your drag is too tight, could be part of the problem, especially if you are setting the hook with some slack in your line.

As much as I dislike Tru-Tungsten, I gotta say that most likely it's your knot breaking from you tying a bad knot, because Tru-Tungsten weights are the best when it comes to taking care of your line.  Unless you have a weight or two with a knick in the insert and that's what's breaking it, I gotta say it's probably your hard hookset combined with a weak knot that is doing it.

Make sure that as your tying your knot and cinching it down that you have it in your mouth as much as possible, ESPECIALLY while your tightening it down.  Also, make sure that when you tighten it, you gradually increase the pressure on the knot rather than that quick jerk a lot of people do.

Good luck my friend.

I have worked on sportfishing boats for years, and was a captain more than half of that time in the san diego sportfishing fleet. Yellowfin and Bluefin, yellowtail to barracuda. You name it, I have been in charge of finding it and killing it. Here is my situation, I know how to tie knots and I know my knots are not bad. I am new to fishing tungsten and glass for punching- I have always used lead. Brand new 65lb spectra and I am constantly breaking off and not if I am stuck or pulling on a fish. Sometimes the hook comes off right in my hand.

I am confident the glass and tungsten combo has to be at fault, if not the tungsten on its own. I have never broken off so much tackle in my life. I love to fish tungsten, I will have to find another set up to punch with- losing tungsten is too expensive, and losing fish is worse.

Just my two cents.

Dunno, but my wild ass guess since knots are out of the equation. Could you be chipping/chipped the glass bead and that sharp edge is cutting the line?

Love the 2010 thread resurrection.
