BenBassmaster Posted October 3, 2012 Posted October 3, 2012 Ok I have been wondering about leaders and how to use them and when to use them. And which leaders to use (Braid, Mono, Flurocarbon). Quote
Super User Darren. Posted October 4, 2012 Super User Posted October 4, 2012 I use leaders 99% of the time, and braid for mainline. Have tried, but see no reason to use a braid leader, neither do I see it a problem if you want to. Kind: 97% P-line Floroclear in mist green in strengths from 6-15 lb test. In waters I fish, it disappears the best, is a good price, and is plenty strong an reliable. I've not had issues with it that some others have. Love the stuff. It has a fluorocarbon coating over a copolymer line. Rest of time is between pure fluorocarbon, Yo-Zuri Hybrid, or other stuff laying around if favorite isn't available. I have two spools of pure FC, but honestly rarely use either. P-Line fits the bill for the vast majority of my bass fishing. I tie a hybrid Albright for leader to mainline (again, braid). I wrap UP about 7 or 8 times, then back down the wraps another 5 or so times. Moisten, tighten and its wicked strong. Why a leader? Well for one, braid is expensive, and retying hooks to braid reduces your mainline a lot more than if you were tying leaders. The leader material can be used until it's too short to use effectively. There are those who will use braid for everything, and that's fine. I simply find the addition of a leader simple enough, strong enough, allows me to change for different situations (6lb for tough conditions, up to 15 lb for heavy cover, etc.). So leaders work for me and my fishing style and may or may not work for others. One dude's fave is another dude's least fave. Hope this helps. 1 Quote
Super User Long Mike Posted October 4, 2012 Super User Posted October 4, 2012 For bass fishing, all of my rods, both baitcasting and spinning, are equipped with forty-pound braid, with a flouro leader - usually twelve-pound. If I'm fishing in slop I have one rod equipped with nothing but sixty-pound braid, with no leader. 1 Quote
BenBassmaster Posted October 4, 2012 Author Posted October 4, 2012 Sorry if you didn't understand I was in a hurry sorry for the inconvenience. And thanks that really helped. Once again in sorry I was in a hurry and I worded every thing wrong. Quote
Super User SirSnookalot Posted October 4, 2012 Super User Posted October 4, 2012 With 30,000 members it's possible to get 30,000 different opinions. People are catching fish with braid and no leader, some use FC, others use leaders cut from mono, and some use actual leader line which is different than a mainline cut. It just boils down to what is your confidence and comfort level, there is no wrong way. One of my target species is considered to be very line shy, however these fish are constantly caught with wire leaders, dispelling the myth that one needs FC to catch them, the rare event of catching them on wire happens everyday.
