Super User Redlinerobert Posted October 1, 2012 Super User Posted October 1, 2012 Would like to go after small tarpon and or snakeheads with bass gear. I've never fished in FL so not sure what to expect, perhaps fishing some canals or back country area? Looking at 10/26 or 10/27. Thanks for any referrals! Quote
Super User Redlinerobert Posted October 1, 2012 Author Super User Posted October 1, 2012 Thanks! All set with snakehead fishing. Now I'm loking for a tarpon guide. Quote
Helluva_Engineer Posted October 1, 2012 Posted October 1, 2012 Where in Florida are you heading? Quote
Super User Redlinerobert Posted October 1, 2012 Author Super User Posted October 1, 2012 I'll be there for a several days, leaving a couple open to fish. I'll be staying in South Beach. Quote
Super User South FLA Posted October 1, 2012 Super User Posted October 1, 2012 The man when it comes to offshore Captain Bouncer Smith, snakeheads as Mike said is Shane. Shoot us a PM maybe we can coordinate a trip to the refuge while you are down. Quote
Super User SoFlaBassAddict Posted October 2, 2012 Super User Posted October 2, 2012 Shane is definitely the man for Snakeheads. You may find some decent Tarpon, Robert, but if you really want a good tarpon trip, you're in for a drive from SOBE. Reports have been pretty good for the offshore bite though. You wanna have some fun, take some bass tackle out and pitch baits to sailfish. Quote
Super User Redlinerobert Posted October 2, 2012 Author Super User Posted October 2, 2012 Im staying in Boca a few days as well. I'll be happy with one day of fishing but I'd love to get 2. how far from the glades will I be? Ideally I'd love to fish there for small tarpon on bass gear. Quote
Super User 00 mod Posted October 2, 2012 Super User Posted October 2, 2012 .............. take some bass tackle out and pitch baits to sailfish. Oh man I am JEALOUS!!!!!!! One of the most fun things to do, yet I have never done with bass gear......... Jeff Quote
Super User Redlinerobert Posted October 22, 2012 Author Super User Posted October 22, 2012 So my gear is packed and we're leaving this evening on a redeye. I'm looking forward to this trip! I packed light and am only taking 10 rods. Quote
Super User SoFlaBassAddict Posted October 22, 2012 Super User Posted October 22, 2012 Oh, only 10 rods, Robert? Lol. 00: So long as you play the fish a bit, it's just fun. If you're not patient though, you'll get your butt whipped in a hurry. I learned how to do it using fly gear for sails and blue marlin in Bimini. Now that is just goofy amounts of fun. Quote
Super User SirSnookalot Posted October 22, 2012 Super User Posted October 22, 2012 There is a ton of fish out there right now, jacks, spanish mackeral, blue fish, some tarpon and snook if you no where to find them. This time of the year the fish run small, but at times it's non stop action for 1 or 2 hours straight, I'm worn out a sore from catching so many fish, nothing beats a jack for fighting. This past weekend we had 4 kings and a dolphin and several cut offs, out only 3 hours. One of my buddys was out Saturday, caught quite a few dolphin, kings, bonita, some big yellow tail on a west wind flat water. This week is going to be very rough, heavy winds a big waves, both inshore and offshore bite should be very hot. We have seen fisherman come with their bass gear before, they seem to always leave it in the car on the second trip.......lol. Quote
Super User 00 mod Posted October 22, 2012 Super User Posted October 22, 2012 Eric: It is now on my bucket list!!! Jeff Quote
Super User Redlinerobert Posted October 24, 2012 Author Super User Posted October 24, 2012 Went to Charlies on the Island for dinner last night. Good place and great stone crab. I thnk we'll try Buccan this evening. Weather looks iffy, let's see how things go this weekend. Flying in yesterday morning I couldn't get over how much water there is here. Quote
piscicidal Posted October 24, 2012 Posted October 24, 2012 Robert, Yeah, we have a bit of a tropical storm issue here. Not the best timing for your trip. There is a TON of water in the everglades right now...make fishing out there very tough. Needle in a haystack...unless you know where to look for the needle. This weather will not be good for fishing Okeechobee either. Can't speak too much for the offshore stuff..I imagine if you can tolerate the waves/weather, the saltwater fishing might be pretty good. Sirsnookalot might be better to speak about the salt... If you have a day to get out Thursday/Friday send me or Robert (South Fla) a PM and we can probably get you on some fish in the glades. Quote
Super User SirSnookalot Posted October 24, 2012 Super User Posted October 24, 2012 Saltwater is about the weather, much of time the rougher the better. I'm out everyday and the fishing has been pretty good, our bigger fish generally show up before and after the fall mullet run which is right now. In the calmer weather we have been catching jacks, bluefish, spanish mackeral, even a 3# jack is a fight you will remember. Yesterday it got a rough and today it was about 25- 30 mph with a good rain, that's when you want to be there, because that is snook time, and they were there as expected. Offshore is going to be rough all week, 6-8-10' waves, too much for me, lol but the kingfish bite should be on fire. We love a tropical storm for fishing, storms bring the bait and the bait brings the fish. Stay out of the ICW, too much freshwater. Quote
Super User Redlinerobert Posted October 24, 2012 Author Super User Posted October 24, 2012 Will this front affect my friday snakehead trip at all? I'm now thinking that my Saturday will be spent at the Rusty Pelican rather than fishing for tarpon in the Everglades. Anyone want to join us? PM me. Quote
Super User Redlinerobert Posted October 25, 2012 Author Super User Posted October 25, 2012 Well so much for my fishing trip. Bad weather looks like it will only get worse. Oh well. I'll plan to come out earlier next year. Quote
Super User SirSnookalot Posted October 25, 2012 Super User Posted October 25, 2012 Looked at the forecast and the beach cams and didn't fish the ocean this morning, but I did fish freshwater inland. I was in Coral Springs this morning and the wind wasn't bad at all, rained off and on but was quite fishable. This is the last week of hurricane season, as Floridians remember Wilma hit us about the same time back in 2008. Sandy's major impact will miss Florida, we will have strong winds for the next couple days, but Sandy is going to cause Havoc further north. The Weather Channel is forecasting a lot of power outages and flooding. Quote
Super User Redlinerobert Posted October 25, 2012 Author Super User Posted October 25, 2012 Well I'll have Monday and Tuesday open so let's see what happens. Thanks! Quote
piscicidal Posted October 30, 2012 Posted October 30, 2012 Robert, I really feel bad our South Florida contingent couldn't get you on some fish while you were down here. We certainly tried. It is very rare when we have a week of poor weather/fishing in Florida. However, not fishing isn't the worst thing that can happen I guess....especially when you see what's going on in the NE right now (my thoughts/prayers go out to all those affected). I'm grateful though, that we did get to meet you and your charming fiancee last night. We really enjoyed hanging out with you guys...and we WILL do it again soon...whether it's California, Las Vegas or Florida. Here's a picture of us hanging out last night at the gorgeous Boca Raton Golf and Country Club. From L to R... Robert (Redline Robert), Martha (Robert's fiancee), Robert (South Fla), Mike (piscicidal). Quote
Super User Redlinerobert Posted October 30, 2012 Author Super User Posted October 30, 2012 Good meeting you guys too Mike. I looke forward to coming back down and getting on to some fish. Wholy moly I look fat in that picture! Quote
