LIBassin92 Posted October 1, 2012 Posted October 1, 2012 Ive been bass fishing for about a year now and am planning on getting a new rod/reel combo. So far i've been using a 6' 6" Medium Bass pro shops graphite series rod with a bass pro shops extreme bait caster. This combo has done me justice but the reel has become less and less usable and is on the verge of breaking. i have been missing hookups constantly because my reel will just stop working. Im planning on getting a Abu Garcia Micro Guide Veritas in 7" Medium Power as a reel i was thinking the new 3rd gen Revo Sx in a 7.1:1 ratio would be a perfect match for his rod. Now i am wondering what line i should be using. I mostly throw un weighted soft plastics (Senkos, super flukes, etc.), weighted soft plastics usually with a 1/16 or 1/8 ounce bullet weight (rage craws, havoc pit boss, etc), light jigs (1/4,3/8), swim jigs, crank baits (lipless and square bill), spinnerbaits, poppers, spooks, and frogs. I was thinking of using P-Line fluoroclear but have yet to try it and have heard mixed reviews, obviously fluorocarbon would be nice but might not work well for my topwater applications. I now ask you fellow bass resource forumeers to aid me in my quest for the perfect all around line....what do you think? Quote
kylek Posted October 1, 2012 Posted October 1, 2012 I just switched all but one of my rods to 12lb yo-zuri hybrid line and so far so good. I do keep 50lb braid on a MH rod for throwing frogs and spooks. Quote
Super User LgMouthGambler Posted October 1, 2012 Super User Posted October 1, 2012 I would look into the revo S instead of the SX due to the cent. brakes that the S has. Anywway, as noted in the other post, I would as well suggest the YoZuri line, 12-15# should work just fine. YoZuri is strong and abrasive resistant. 1 Quote

Plus if you get the Revo S, you will have the exact top water rig that I have I run 30# Braid on my set up. If I need to be like a Ninja, I will tie on a fluoro leader. THe YoZuri is very recommended on this board. I have not tried it myself as I have a large stock of line built up, but I would not hesitate to use it at all. Quote
LIBassin92 Posted October 2, 2012 Author Posted October 2, 2012 ill be picking up some YoZuri 12lb this weekend thanks all for the quick replies....Happy fishing Quote

LIBassin92 Posted October 2, 2012 Author Posted October 2, 2012 Has anyone used the new 3rd gen Revo Sx or S? Apparently they have improved the breaking system of the SX (still magnetic though ) but if everyone is saying the S is better then i will definitely trust your opinion.....also the Revo S is only available in a 6.4:1 gear ratio which is only 26 inches per turn in contrast to the SX which is available in a 7.1:1 and has 29 inches per turn the SX is also lighter. idk im stuck Quote
TNBassin' Posted October 2, 2012 Posted October 2, 2012 I have a Gen 3 Revo S and a Gen 3 STX. I had a Gen 2 SX which I HATED, and also own a Black Max 2 that uses the same braking system as the new SX. While the Mag Trax brakes are much easier to tune, I will never purchase another reel with magnetic only brakes. IMO, JUMP on the Revo S. It's a great reel, and it's buttery smooth. I can't say enough about it. I can launch baits like no other, and the pitch centrifugal brakes make back lashing nearly impossible. The S is available in only the 6:4:1 version, but it's plain amazing all around. If you want a great rod to stick it on, pair it up with a Veritas rod, which Walmart.com has on sale right now for $70.80 which is a STEAL. My vote goes to the S or STX if you have the extra cash. I've never used an SX, but have read plenty of posts on the Gen 2 reels. It can cast a mile, but many seem to be very finicky. I will also agree that a reel with centrifugal brakes is usually going to be more backlash resistant than a mag only reel. Especially until your thumb gets a little learning in...say high school level. You should give a decent Daiwa a try before giving up on mag only brake reels. Try a Fuego, 153HSTA, Zillion, Sol, TD-X, TD-S, TD-Z, etc. for awhile first. No need to get a Steez or another of Daiwa's top tier reels. I have an '09 STX which is a mag only reel. It works just fine, thank you. Quote

The BMAX 2 uses the same exact braking system as the new Revo SX, which was miles better than the linear mag system in the Revo SX gen 2. Mag brake reels are good for flipping and pitching, but I prefer centrifugal brakes for all around performance as they are much more versatile. I have a new Gen 3 STX and it has the best of both worlds. Quote
LIBassin92 Posted October 2, 2012 Author Posted October 2, 2012 Think im going with the stx in 7.1:1 Quote
LIBassin92 Posted October 3, 2012 Author Posted October 3, 2012 is 7.1:1 a good all around gear ratio? Quote
TNBassin' Posted October 3, 2012 Posted October 3, 2012 IMO, 6:4:1 is a great all around set up but 7:1:1 should be good too. You can always slow down your retrieve easier with a 7:1:1 reel easier than you can speed up your retrieve with a 6:4:1. Either way you should be good. Quote
