Clint C. Posted September 30, 2012 Posted September 30, 2012 Hey everyone, When my parents fish with me pretty much the only thing they care about is getting their bait as far out to the middle of the lake as possible and letting it sit there. What equipment would you recommend? It would have to be a spinning reel that's not super heavy, the lighter the better. Maybe the Daiwa SS Tournament® Spinning Reel? I have a 7ft medium fast action rod to put it on. Would a different rod be better? I usually keep 6lb flourocarbon on their reels, or ~15lb braid. What combos have you had luck with being able to cast a mile, decently effortlessly? I want to try and stay around $150-$200, but if you know of something more expensive that is just completely awesome let me know =0) Thanks! Quote
Super User roadwarrior Posted September 30, 2012 Super User Posted September 30, 2012 Well, 00 Mod fishes a Pinnacle rod he swears by, but I don't know the exact model. I'm sure he will respond later. He is using the Stradic CI4 on the rod. J Francho fishes a Pinnacle reel that he likes. Maybe he will respond, too. I don't really have a suggestion, my stuff doesn't fit the parameters. Quote
Super User 00 mod Posted September 30, 2012 Super User Posted September 30, 2012 My Pinnacle rod is a DHC5-701SPML. It is absolutely great. I frequently fish, wacky senko, live bait rig, weightless plastics, and shakey heads on it. It fishes more like a M rod. With the ci4 it weights 10.5 oz. Incredibly light and I think it would fit your purpose perfectly. I pick it up over my St. Croix elite almost every time. I like it that much! Jeff Quote

Looks interesting. Quote
Super User OkobojiEagle Posted October 1, 2012 Super User Posted October 1, 2012 Before you spend the dollars for a new rod/reel spend 20 dollars for a spool of 10lb NanoFil. oe Quote

Super User new2BC4bass Posted October 1, 2012 Super User Posted October 1, 2012 I personally think you picked a fine reel, but that is just my personal opinion. A longer rod equals longer distance as long as it loads with the weight being used. I don't know the first thing about surf casting rods, but maybe one would work for that scenario. I don't care for that long of a rod, but if all you are interested in is distance, it might be the way to go. However I doubt it will be as light as you would like. I'd rather have a 7'6" medium. Clint C. Posted October 1, 2012 Author Posted October 1, 2012 Thanks guys... @00 Mod - I think that's more money than I wanna spend for a rod and reel that won't see much action, but I'm definitely going to check out that combo for myself =p @okobojieagle - Great advice, I personally like that line too @Diggy - Yeah and amazon has that combo for $66 bucks right now +free shipping. I'm just going to get one I know it won't go to waste especially at that price. @new2bc4bass - I considered the surf rods as well, I just know they wouldn't be happy lugging around something that large. That Arbor combo has a 7'4 rod... Seems like it might be the best way to go. Quote
Diggy Posted October 1, 2012 Posted October 1, 2012 cheeeeeep, especially when the reel is 80 at tw.com Quote
Super User SirSnookalot Posted October 1, 2012 Super User Posted October 1, 2012 IMO it's more about line and rod and to a much lesser degree the reel. Surf rods are bulky and heavy, I see them used quite a bit, 100 yd+ casts are commonplace. Dealing with a more traditonal style rod, I don't see anything that casts further than an ugly stick. The lite series, which are still a bit heavier than " better" rods, I don't feel the extra little bit of weight would be of major concern given the intended application. I use a soron 20 on redbone 7' 8/17, from a 10' high jettie half my line is casted out, the spool holds 170 yds of 15# braid, the uglies cast past me. The disclaimer would be I'm may be using a diamond jig, a tradional lure or bait is never going to go that far. But this is the easy fix, put a 1/4 or 1/2 oz egg weight above your swivel, real common set up and the "chunkers" cast their bait out a ton. Quote
Clint C. Posted November 5, 2012 Author Posted November 5, 2012 I ended up getting a Pflueger Arbor combo and it's pretty awesome. Casts a mile with no effort using power pro super slick! Quote
