Super User Tuckahoe Joe Posted September 30, 2012 Super User Posted September 30, 2012 OMG! I hate the wind! Think I had the most frustrating day ever fishing today. Aside from the fact that I didn't catch anything, the wind just wouldn't let up. Not gale force winds or anything. Just a steady 10mph wind. Whenever I'd cast, the wind would carry my lure a good 20-30 feet away from where I wanted it and then once I'd start my retrieve the wind would keep putting ridiculous amounts of slack in my line. I tried to move around a bit and kinda fish the way the wind was blowing but at the lake I was at, there's only so many spots you can fish from the shore. My weighted texas rigged worms seemed like they weren't sinking properly and fishing weightless senkos was completly futile since the wind blowing the line just kept them on the surface. Didn't have too much of a problem with crankbaits but nothing was hitting on them. Anyone else have any of these problems? Im still kinda new to fishing so it might just be me. Any tips? Quote
Super User rockchalk06 Posted September 30, 2012 Super User Posted September 30, 2012 Excellent day for Jigs! I have a few different lakes I go to when its windy like that. If the wind is out of the south, I fish a lake with a huge d**n behind me to knock the wind down. I plan my trips around the wind Quote
shimmy Posted September 30, 2012 Posted September 30, 2012 Excellent day for Jigs! I have a few different lakes I go to when its windy like that. If the wind is out of the south, I fish a lake with a huge d**n behind me to knock the wind down. I plan my trips around the wind can always use the jig as stated or carolina rig the senko, heavy spinnerbait etc. to launch that bait out there. I was out in Northern VA yesterday and the wind kicked my trash as well as it never let up, but had a great day on the water catching a fair amount and some good ones too. Just go heavier with whatever you choose to do. If you are limited to shore, i would focus on the side that has the wind blowing into it amongst all the other variables, structure, points, channels blah blah blah. Go heavier so at least you have a fighting chance. Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted October 1, 2012 Global Moderator Posted October 1, 2012 Man 10mph is a gentle breeze around here , most of the time it's closer to 20 and I've fished more than my fair share of days over 30 and gusting over 40. It can be really tough at times. Moving baits are your best option, spinnerbaits, cranks, traps, or chatterbaits. If they aren't working like you said I like a 1/2 jig. You'll need a sensitive rod and good feel, it can be tough to feel even a hard bite. If they won't eat a jig then a beaver style bait with a 3/8oz bullet weight would be my next choice. Quote
Super User Tuckahoe Joe Posted October 1, 2012 Author Super User Posted October 1, 2012 Lost my only spinnerbait 2 trips ago. Gonna pick up another one when i get some money. I have a couple jigs but dont quite know how to fish them properly. I should probably read up on some of the topics about jigs. Carolina rig sounds like it would have been a good option. Why didn't I think of that? Thanks for the tips guys. Quote
Super User Bankbeater Posted October 1, 2012 Super User Posted October 1, 2012 Been there, done that. I like heavy jigs and c-rigs myself. Quote
