Drop Shot Question

Tried drop shot fishing from shore earlier today. Have hook about 16" from the weight, have the right knot, hook, worm, etcetc.

My question is, when trying to keep the line taught it seems to continuously pull it across the bottom? Is that the jist of the technique? I had 3 good hits fishing blind 2 of which lost my worm, 4th hit I landed a 3# LMB. All of the 4 times is when the weight got hung up in weeds. If I cast in other terrain it wants to keep coming in... This is prob cuz my angle and from what I'm gathering "a boat technique". Anyhow today was my first time trying the method out, 1 fish for 2 hours :/ just wanna see if the drift is normal or if I'm supposed to get the weight hung up? Thanks in advance!

Not an expert but do a lot of dropshoting from my boat. My suggestion would be to give it a little slack so it can stay put and hold the rod still.

Use a heaver weight.

In the weeds is where the fish are.

I tried a little different setup when confronted with weeds on the bottom.

I used a 3 way swivel with the weight on 8# test about 12" from the swivel. Then used 20# test about 16" and used a high floating worm to keep the worm above the weeds. It worked PDG where I was fishing. Also it helps in heavy treetops in case the weight hangs up.

Don't know what this setup is called maybe someone will comment.

Is the rod light and sensitive? Use the "off-hand" fingers to hold the line. You will have more contact with the bottom.

Med/Fast Action. Spinning reel. 1/2oz weight. 6# test mono. Yea I know the LMBs are in the weeds but there's some rocky sections near the drop off I know the other Bass hang out at. - so to answer my questio: heavier weight, more slack and try to keep it more still? Some youtube vids you'd swear the guys are jiggin the way they are drop shotting lol. Will try this in the am thanks guys!

I'm surprised that 1/2 oz weight doesn't keep it anchored, but sounds like when you tighten the line it's pulling it towards you, but when I fish a drop-shot horizontally, I keep it moving towards me, and BTW the heaviest weight I use is 1/4 OZ(unless it's really windy). I use floro for drop shotting, better at transmitting the light pickups you're going to get.

There's also, in addtion to the vids on this site, a good Aaron Martens vid on fishing the drop shot, just do a search on "Aaron Martens Drop shot video". It's only about 5 minutes long, but yet he does a great job in explaining various ways to fish the DS and what is going on with your bait.

I suggest switching to a 3/16-1/4 oz weight and all (6-8#) fluoro. Or a 30# braid with a (6-8#) fluoro leader. The stretch and memory of a light mono and heavy weight are IMO, your issue. Get the stretch out.

Went out on the boat today tried drop shotting horizontally. Green Pumpkin worm landed 1 Small mouth, small prob just shy of 2lbs, 2nd. I tried with a live minnow in 2 seconds nailed a yellow perch. Tried multiple baits over the next 30-40 casts nothing. Switched back to cranks and spinners. Was using 4# Fluoro as leader for trout fishing today. Def wanna try a spool of it on 1 of my reels. Went out with a few of my saltwater buddies for the trout so I was only on 1 pole, shared my other 2 otherwise would have stripped down 1 and tried it out. Love my 6# Spider mono lol

Anyhow def see the huge difference from boat rather then from shore, soooooo much easier and the back to back fish were a good sign. Will def be a new technique to try when the fish are finicky.

dam0007, it's still a good technique to use from shore. It just takes a little practice to keep the weight on the bottom. Stick with it. And yeah, some folks do keep a drop shot moving; like they were using a Carolina Rig.
