TNBassin' Posted September 29, 2012 Posted September 29, 2012 Just got my stx gen 3 in the mail today. It's extremely tight when turning the handle, almost like the spool tension knob is too tight, which is not because even without the knob on it's the same. I've made sure the tension pads have a dot of oil on them and the ends of the spool shaft do too. Odd thing is, even without the spool in the frame it still feels tight? Is this a dud or do the new stxs have really tight tolerances? Quote
TNBassin' Posted September 29, 2012 Author Posted September 29, 2012 Nvm. Swapped it out and am good to go. Quote
Super User rockchalk06 Posted September 30, 2012 Super User Posted September 30, 2012 Did you get it online or in the store? Quote
TNBassin' Posted September 30, 2012 Author Posted September 30, 2012 Online but swapped it out at the store. The guy at the counter was amazed at how tight the handle was. New one is like night and day. These new Abus have let me down so far. Quote
Super User rockchalk06 Posted September 30, 2012 Super User Posted September 30, 2012 I am wondering if it has something to do with different manufactures in diffferent places Quote
TNBassin' Posted September 30, 2012 Author Posted September 30, 2012 I hear the new Shimanos aren't the best either. I figured Abu would cheapen the revos this gen and so far it looks like I was right. Quote
Super User rockchalk06 Posted September 30, 2012 Super User Posted September 30, 2012 The Tech at pure fishing told me they went with a new manufacture on them. Wouldn't say anything else though Quote
barroncooper Posted September 30, 2012 Posted September 30, 2012 my new winch has been impressive thus far! Quote
WIBassMan Posted September 30, 2012 Posted September 30, 2012 Sorry to hear about your bad luck but my STX has been awesome. I have it paired with my Legend Elite and it's one sweet combo. I'm able to cast 1/4 oz lures into the wind without birdnesting. Quote
TNBassin' Posted September 30, 2012 Author Posted September 30, 2012 My new one is fine. The other one just acted like the spool tension was cranked all the way down. The spool free spun fine, but cranking it felt bound up with or without the spool in. Quote

The Shimano's are fine, and problem free. Don't listen to all the winers who have nothing better to do than knock the new G series, the G series is a great reel, and will prove itself in time just as the E series has. Quote
Super User LgMouthGambler Posted September 30, 2012 Super User Posted September 30, 2012 And this is why I dont care for these reels. My knowing that all these reels are mass produced for Abu, Fleuger, Lews, and BPS, just turns me off to buying one again. No reel has proved me better than my Shimanos. Quote

Is this a dud or do the new stxs have really tight tolerances? I own two Gen3 STX's: here's your problem: there is oil on your spool track. All you had to do was open the side plate and, with a tissue, wipe down the spool tracks and the spool itself. I read reviews that state that they are over oiled, and that problem occurs often. It's not the reel, or or manufacturer, just a little oil. Better luck next time!! Quote

TNBassin' Posted September 30, 2012 Author Posted September 30, 2012 Even with the spool out, the handle had resistance so there's no way. Quote
Megastink Posted September 30, 2012 Posted September 30, 2012 That could be true. Without handling it myself, I couldn't possibly know for sure. However, that's the solution to my reels. I guess you just got a dud. Maybe ask DVT on this forum for possible diagnoses? Quote
TNBassin' Posted September 30, 2012 Author Posted September 30, 2012 I've already exchanged it. The new one is much better thankfully. Quote
Rangerjoe Posted October 3, 2012 Posted October 3, 2012 I have a Gen 3 STX and 8 Gen 1's STX and SX and never had a problem. I guess I have just been lucky. Now I did own several Curado E's which I did not like, but never found it necessay to bad mouth a manufacture. I guess when you get old enough you don't have to justify your buying decisions. Quote
Super User J Francho Posted October 3, 2012 Super User Posted October 3, 2012 All bass fishing reels are "mass produced." Every brand has defects. That's why they have a warranty to protect you. The OP got to see this process first hand. You could probably find hundreds of people with a similar experience, and substitute any brand/model reel. 1 Quote
Super User .RM. Posted October 3, 2012 Super User Posted October 3, 2012 With 27 yrs in service, I would say it this way All fishing reels are "mass produced." and every brand has defects. It is the reason all factories have a warranty period to protect you. Tight Lines! Quote
Delaware Valley Tackle Posted October 3, 2012 Posted October 3, 2012 Chances are a spacer was missing causing the AR sleeve to not protrude for good contact drag spring washers. As stated, every brand has a lemon here or there. Quote

TNBassin' Posted October 3, 2012 Author Posted October 3, 2012 The REVOS I've gotten lately I'm sure are from the first few runs. Early adopters like myself always experience more issues than those that buy the same things later on down the road. Kinks will always need to be worked out no matter how well planned or manufactured something is. Quote
