Just got my stx gen 3 in the mail today. It's extremely tight when turning the handle, almost like the spool tension knob is too tight, which is not because even without the knob on it's the same. I've made sure the tension pads have a dot of oil on them and the ends of the spool shaft do too. Odd thing is, even without the spool in the frame it still feels tight? Is this a dud or do the new stxs have really tight tolerances?

Online but swapped it out at the store. The guy at the counter was amazed at how tight the handle was. New one is like night and day. These new Abus have let me down so far.

I am wondering if it has something to do with different manufactures in diffferent places

I hear the new Shimanos aren't the best either. I figured Abu would cheapen the revos this gen and so far it looks like I was right.

The Tech at pure fishing told me they went with a new manufacture on them. Wouldn't say anything else though

Sorry to hear about your bad luck but my STX has been awesome. I have it paired with my Legend Elite and it's one sweet combo. I'm able to cast 1/4 oz lures into the wind without birdnesting.

My new one is fine. The other one just acted like the spool tension was cranked all the way down. The spool free spun fine, but cranking it felt bound up with or without the spool in.

The Shimano's are fine, and problem free. Don't listen to all the winers who have nothing better to do than knock the new G series, the G series is a great reel, and will prove itself in time just as the E series has.

And this is why I dont care for these reels. My knowing that all these reels are mass produced for Abu, Fleuger, Lews, and BPS, just turns me off to buying one again. No reel has proved me better than my Shimanos.

I own two Gen3 STX's: here's your problem: there is oil on your spool track. All you had to do was open the side plate and, with a tissue, wipe down the spool tracks and the spool itself. I read reviews that state that they are over oiled, and that problem occurs often. It's not the reel, or or manufacturer, just a little oil.

Better luck next time!!

I find it very hard to beleive that a little oil will make the handle that hard to turn....

Even with the spool out, the handle had resistance so there's no way.

That could be true. Without handling it myself, I couldn't possibly know for sure. However, that's the solution to my reels. I guess you just got a dud.

Maybe ask DVT on this forum for possible diagnoses?

I've already exchanged it. The new one is much better thankfully.

I have a Gen 3 STX and 8 Gen 1's STX and SX and never had a problem. I guess I have just been lucky. Now I did own several Curado E's which I did not like, but never found it necessay to bad mouth a manufacture. I guess when you get old enough you don't have to justify your buying decisions.

All bass fishing reels are "mass produced." Every brand has defects. That's why they have a warranty to protect you. The OP got to see this process first hand. You could probably find hundreds of people with a similar experience, and substitute any brand/model reel.

With 27 yrs in service, I would say it this way

It is the reason all factories have a warranty period to protect you.

Tight Lines! :Victory:

Much more eloquent!

The REVOS I've gotten lately I'm sure are from the first few runs. Early adopters like myself always experience more issues than those that buy the same things later on down the road. Kinks will always need to be worked out no matter how well planned or manufactured something is.
